Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The good news, I finally have a clear reason for the swelling in my left leg the bad news, I have to wear mojos socks when I cycle. I just hope he washes them.

So the main vein that goes down my leg, starts with an S doesn’t work properly. There is a procedure that basically closes the valves and that “may” fix the problem, but the other issue I have is the deep veins in my leg do not work efficiently either. They can’t do this procedure on those. The doctor is spearheading transplant therapy for valves in the deep veins but I don’t qualify at this moment because I am not in pain or is it really affecting my life.

He’s doing another ultra sound on my mid section he suspects that one of the arteries is getting restricted by my spine. When I was a little tyke my spine was slightly curved. Crazy. He told me to think about the procedure and come back in a couple of months. No rush to get it done. He didn’t recommend me to take the diuretic long term which has been helping. So I proly will get it done in Jan and pray that fixes it. Other wise valve transplant might be in my distant future.

For variety, sometimes I will do those rides on my gravel bike or SS-MTB. The 2.5mi climb I ride most often is a deteriorating fire road that includes some fairly rough and rocky sections. I'm faster on the rough parts on my MTB, but faster on the smooth parts on my gravel bike. I find it interesting that neither bike has proven to have an overall advantage on this climb. I set a PR on my MTB yesterday that was just barely faster than the PR set on my gravel bike recently, which beat a PR on my MTB... For me, mixing road, MTB, and gravel helps keep riding fresh, fun, and motivating.

Road rides tend to be my time to be social - even if being "social" means suffering in a strung-out peloton at 30+mph. - or a time to think. Dirt rides force me to think only about the moment I'm in, and the terrain I'm dealing with. All the other noise in my head shuts up. Dirt therapy is good for my soul.
There is something very "zen" about riding MTB, isn't there. Forces you to be less in your head and more in the moment and your sensory inputs.

For me, road is about solo training, fun (group rides, team training rides) and racing. It can be as fun as MTB, but usually isn't on a solo ride. For a solo unstructured ride - MTB all the way.

They're awesome. They were around in my childhood, then disappeared (at least mostly) for a long time, then came back.

Of course now I'm trying to avoid them.

Need one of those this week. Nothing but rain here.

Of course, I don't ride in the rain. Might melt.

Some great roads in the SM mountains. The ATOC raced through there.

Some fun dirt, too.

I used to run a cst tire , still have a couple at home...something speed or speed something ( top speed maybee?). They were great tires . All of a sudden they stopped selling them and came out with the czar line of tires. They had a much higher rolling resistance. I stopped using them. They were a real good tire, and inexpensive.

pretty dope. Clicks into my light mount, which all my bikes have so I can swap as needed. Plan on getting the blendr saddle bag once they start selling the mounts seperatly will be able to swap everything with a click. I know most don’t care for bontrager stuff but they did awesome with the blendr stuff.

The Blendr stuff is pretty nice. I use it on both road bikes. It really helps integrate the lights/computer, etc. I like a super clean bike without a lot of stuff hanging on it.

Cervelo has done a similar thing for the bars, but for some reason has not addressed the rear end.

Sht happens. Had a plane try to land on top of me when I was on final in Lake Havasu. If the lady holding short of the run hadnt scream OH MY GOD over the radio we wouldn’t be having this conversation. This was my little airplane days.

Thanks again for riding with me and the lift back to Santa Monica. The PCH was quiet when I headed out before daybreak, but I don’t care to ride in traffic. I plan to be back in May for Heidi’s graduation. I would love to come out your way and go up Mt Baldy, but too early to commit.
