There's a group ride I try to join every Wednesday night. I don't always make it, but I've been pretty consistent lately. We ride 21 miles on pretty flat terrain. About 15-20 riders start together, but by five or six miles in, we usually separate into multiple groups, with me ending up in the middle or even the slowest group. I never felt too bad about this, because even the slow group averages 17-18 MPH. Last week I was feeling strong and decided to try keeping up with the lead group, about 25 MPH. That didn't last long. I bonked, got dropped, and had to fall in with the middle group, about 21 MPH. Quickly got dropped again. I came in with the stragglers and kept thinking, "Note to self: come next week with more fuel in the tank!" I didn't hydrate enough before this ride (temp was mid-90s), should have carb'ed up a few hours prior, and maybe should have taken some goo or chews to eat around the halfway point.
Instead, it's very likely that you simply went harder than your current level of fitness would allow.

endurance distress isn't the best way to maintain or to try & increase a sustainable performance.

Follow up with yesterday’s ride results...
I rode with the same group, on exactly the same route, same time of day, and similar average temperature (93 F, just 2 degrees cooler than last week).
I was happy to see my moving average speed increased by .5 MPH, nearly 3% faster. I attribute it to better preparation. I hydrated better all afternoon and also ate better. And I took an insulated water bottle so my drink would stay cool longer. I find it hard to drink when the water is warm, just makes me want to puke.
I feel like I was pushing close to my max for nearly an hour. I’ve never done an FTP test and don’t know how many Watts I can put out, for an instant, a minute, or 5 minutes, let alone an hour. But I gave a solid, consistent effort over nearly the entire ride.
Once again I was really spent. I slept like the dead, and today I feel great!
