New to the forum. I worked at a Trek dealer while in college in the 80s. I still have a 1983 Trek 720 and a 1984 Trek 170 that I purchased at the time. Here's the 170: 170 frameset with Campagnolo Super Record, Cinelli bar and stem, Wolber Aspin rims with sew-up tires. The tires, handlebar tape, and brake lever hoods (Modolo anatomic) have been changed over the years but everything else is still original.

The 170 was a bit of a twist of fate. I originally ordered and received a 970 frameset but when I went to build the bike the frame had a defect. The 970 was no longer being made so I had to choose between going for the next model down or the next model up - the 170. I took the plunge and ended up with the 170 - a bike that had originally seemed out of my reach.

I thought I replied to this earlier- but that Wheel and Sprocket decal is on my 730. When I got the bike I took it in to the W&S Hales Corners store... Just because.
Although the address is different than it was in 1978/79- when you roll up to the store- it looks like a little place in a strip mall. When you open the door- you see this colossal expanse of bike shop. It's kind of mind blowing because it looks so small from the outside.
When I was a kid, Wheel and Sprocket used to have cartoon ads in the comics section of the Milwaukee Journal Sunday comics section. I recognize the one guy there from the comics ads from 35 years ago.

Thats cool, I was hoping someone would recognize the decal. Thanks!

'88 was the only year they made the yellow 360 (with blue letters and cable housings). I believe the lugged cro-mo frame was brazed together with an automated process. The end of the era of mass [American] made steel bikes. Not a special bicycle. But I think a pretty one.

I just bought another bike, and I have one for sale (to get me back to "N"). I am currently exploring my storage/display options.

And thanks to the Internet the comics are still viewable Designed to Inspire: Among Comic Strip Royalty
I would always assume the comics themselves to be "around," but not so much the ads.
The guy with the glasses in the 3rd panel was in all the ads, and he is still at the W&S location at Hales Corners- I don't know his name, I just remember him from cartoon ads from 30 years ago!

1987 Trek Elance 400 (double)
Always thought this year 400 looked pretty good, must be the sparkle paint blinds all imperfections!. 24in frame and given quick overhaul, straightened rear hanger, headset repack, tuned, added saddle and pedals. Interesting note has stock shimano light action and sakae crank but wheelset was swapped at some point to ambrosia rims on miche competition hubs, atom77 freewheel.

My 1984 400 Series... Purchased new from Two Wheeled Cycle in Newark during my junior year in high school... Still arguably the best $349 I have ever spent. Many new parts over the years but still a great ride.

A few shots of my 1981 715. Finally broke down and gave myself lower gears. There's a few routes by me that I just could not ride due to the elevation. Changed the rear cog from a 28 to a 34, new chain, and went with a deore RD-M591-sgs. Also added a spurcycle bell.
Have the Twin Lights ride this weekend and she's ready to go!

I found this 1989 Trek 400 last week for $80 and I'd say she is in pretty nice shape. 24" frame too.

All these great road bike treks but apparently no love for mtbs? I have 2 treks in the build queue (a 1983 trek 720 and a 1984 Trek 610) but I recently picked up this 1992 trek 950. I know these old Treks have great paint jobs but this paint job looks almost like it came out of the showroom (with a few scratches). The OP changed out the shifters and brakes; I went ahead and switched out the crank. The bike just rides great with 26 x 2.0 schwalbe supreme touring tires. It is fast becoming my favorite commuter. I'd still like to pick up some Velo Orange crazy bars for it but right now it's just sporting a straight bar and bar ends:
