I'd be surprised if the creators of the stringbike drivetrain were NOT familiar with predecessors like the Alenax. We live in the Information Age, after all. If anything, the Alenax would have likely showed up in a patent search. One clear improvement of the stringbike over the Alenax is the full rotation of the pedals; the Alenax seemed to have very limited range of motion.
I low-key love inventors tilting at windmills. Lots of crazy idea and every once in a while an idea sticks.

Did they conclude that it would be a winner if they just replaced the chain with string?
We'll never know for sure. Maybe some business school has a class devoted to studying these sorts of failures?
If you love crazy ideas, then check out some of the books that cover the evolution of the bicycle. There were tons of clever and creative ideas. Some proved themselves worthwhile, while others were doomed to painful deaths, only returning every 20 or 30 years in a slightly altered form and destined to fail again.
On the plus side, sometimes a good idea is just waiting for material science to develop. The Mavic Zap was a failed attempt at electronic shifting, but as electronics progressed, others were able to make it work.

Whoa, portland bike shop on 48th? And division has one of these in their window.
Size 58. He will sell, but for right now, he likes the conversation element it brings. And he really wants to ride it in the Ladd Circle 500. (Full ride where you do 500 laps around a local traffic circle).

its a big rose filled diamond shaped park. Probably a hair less than a 1/4 mile.
Many Portland rides start and finish there.

OK, 500 laps equals 100 miles. I'm no mathlete but….
