Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I dont get it either.

it's a handmade lugged steel bike. How can someone who owns a bike get so in love with it and so defensive about it.

it's a bike ffs.

Sure it's well made, but to wait years for a bike to be built for you is a bit weird.

I thought my custom frames ordered from italy and spain were slow, when they take most of summer off for holidays. But waiting years? forget that. it's going to get scratched, dinged and whatever else happens to bikes.

There is probably some very good reason why the wait for a custom made Sachs frame is as long as it is... I wonder what that could be ?

I got to see Sach's bikes at NAHBS and they're beautiful. Not my cup of tea, but neither is carbon fiber. The bike with the greatest value is the one you ride and ride and ride.

I would argue that reason to be the Veblen effect. From a pure product standpoint, what does a Sachs frame provide over the competition that makes it worth waiting the better part of a decade for? I guess I don't really buy into the typical "work of art" justification, but to each their own.

lots of people placing an order.

You can have a full everything custom pegoretti in 6-8 months. Pretty sure they are nice, straight fine handling steel frames. Pretty popular too.

Why would anyone wait 5 years for some retro steel bike? Man, that's unfathomable.

It really was a joke... I wouldn't claim to be better than you because you haven't spent your life learning how to do surgery, either.

I'd rather have one of your frames Sacha, but the five year wait seems a bit long and since I live in SoFla I need a SS frame which you do not seem to offer. Any chance you'd help a fellow BF'er out?

Yeah right! Like about 99% of the people on the road-oriented Bike Forums aren't buying a brand name, or a catchy model name, or the name of a racing star associated with the brand.

Sachs bikes certainly have their own aesthetic beauty (never ridden one so I can't speak for the ride quality), but so do Vanillas and Della Santas and Bob Jacksons and Don Walkers and Landsharks and Strongs and Kirks and, for me, even those darn factory built Waterfords — I'm personally lusting over an RS-22 from them.

To each his own, as long as people are riding the darn thing and think it is beautiful in their own eyes.

As a small business of one, Richard's got the right to cap the queue whenever he wants. He obviously feels long-term he can garner enough business from existing clients, while building up enough new customers with the cut-off date, that he'll have enough work till he wants to hang up the welder.

Of course, if that flops, he can always re-open the queue in the future. Smart move I say.

Tough economy huh Rich? Must be nice...... You might be great, but five years and no longer accpeting orders? You ain't that great.

Kind of reminds me of the dermatolgist that is "booked for the next 6 months" or "not accepting new patients at this time." I'm sorry but if you can't find +/-30 minutes someone into your scedule for the next 180 days you went to med school for the wrong friggin reasons.
