I've been spending all summer tracking down the original parts for this...My 91 Dyno Compe



I got hit by a geo metro on this thing around 1997, I started to take it apart to replace the bent crank and a few other parts then something must have happen and I put the bike away like this at my parents house.

Lucky my little brother somehow still had the original crank and wheels, that I had originally replaced with better ones when I first got the bike.



I'm still trying to find some small things like cables, tires, and brake parts. But once I'm done my plan is to take it to the new indoor BMX park, and see if I can still do any tricks on it

My Nov/Dec projects were building up a couple of Cherubim for the Philly show, finishing the '74 Harry Quinn I picked up back in June at the CR weekend, and refurbing/updating my Gunnar Crosshairs commuter.

The Steel Master is on loan from Cherubim, a NAHBS prize-winning show bike. Konno's design flair is pretty evident:


I built this new Cherubim Touring frame up as a 1x, with Honjos, then decided to just show the frame at Philly:


The '74 Quinn Tourist needed a buildup, went 1x here as well. Just now finished attaching the VO Contructeur rear rack and Riv Sackville trunk rack. The rack is level, but the bag is leaning a bit rearward:


I've been kinda neglecting this '07 Gunnar Crosshairs, so I pulled it out of mothballs, cleaned her up and did a little updating. Moved the Sturmey-Archer S3X shifter from the downtube to the bar end, raised the gearing just a bit and installed a couple of blue-anodized Paul Moon Units. I want to put a VO Constructeur rack in the rear here as well, but with centered strut mounts on the rack and seatstay-side rack mounts on the frame, with a canti straddle cable in the way, installation looks a little messy. I never put panniers on this bike, so the Tubus Cargo rack is way overkill for a rack trunk:

I've been slowly reviving this 1984 Centurion Elite GT. First pic is from the "For Sale" ad from which I bought it, and the second 2 are how it's looking at the moment. It will be a beauty when I'm done, and definitely a keeper!

I got to wrench and ride a bit this morning, even though it's winter. The tandem is at our country place. I changed the (captain's) saddle to a firmer one. I had a gel saddle which was too squooshy.

I also took a look at the gearing. The bottom gear is just about right, but the top gear is too low. So I counted the teeth on all the cassette cogs and chainrings. No wonder the top was too low. The cassette is 13-34, and the crank is 28/38/48. That gives me a bottom of 22 and a high of 100 inches. Tandems need a wider range than singles. I see I can get a 60T chainring. Oh, but I forgot to notice if the chainrings have ramps and pins. How much of a hassle will it be if I need them and don't have them? The entire drivetrain is Deore XT, but I don't know what year. I put a non-pinned crankset on another bike, and the front just wouldn't shift from middle to big.

There do not seem to be 7-speed Hyperglide cassettes with 11T cogs, so I think I'll stick with this cassette. There are others just like this one, so I can replace it when it wears out.

I didn't take any pictures, so here is a picture from the summer. The bike is a Burley Zydeco.

I keep forgetting how even the more vintage-aware LBS's can be oblivious to the differences between bikes of today and yesterday. For example, a few days ago I picked up that yellow brake housing and asked for some extra, thinkin' to myself that I might prefer it over that stiff shifter housing if I switched to friction shifting. And the guy actually said "I gave you some extra because...<mumble>..." After I'd cut the rear section I realized what was left was just about right, maybe even half an inch shorter than I'd prefer, for the front, with nothing left over. Ah, everybody thinks aero-cables now. Of course I didn't think to mention it either. I've rigged exactly one aero-brake handlebar in my life and have no motivation to rig another.

Thank you! I've just been using the original Dia-Compe canti brakes, and original Sugino RT triple.

After thoroughly cleaning everything I found most all of the original components to be in pretty good shape. I don't think it was ever ridden much.

It's become my favorite ride for sure though! Many upgrdes to come in the future too.

Nothing big, tightened the drive side cup (Italian) on my torpado as got loose days after I posted not having any problems with Italian BB getting loose. Don't make the bike gods mad

Nice shop and dulcimer production line Slim. Much tidier than my basement. Trying to do wood working and bike wrenching in the same shop space is challenging.

Lately I've been working at overhaul and upgrade of the 71 Schwinn Super Sport I got as a spare parts donor during the Klunker challenge. It is near done and I also have my Klunker Challenge 66 Super Sport almost ready for paint and re-assembly with upgrades. Don

I missed this earlier. Those Cherubims are both sweet. Please explain the saddle on the Steel Master. And what is the rear derailleur?

Love the Cherubim Touring model, but this retrogrouch wishes it had a more classic drivetrain and perhaps some leather bar wrap to match the saddle.

Been slaving away eradicating 40 years worth of rust pockets (inside of tubes are good), dirt, grease, and whatever clingy film/glaze was on the chrome of a sweet all-chrome Super Le Tour 12.2 I picked up two weeks ago (my size!). Nearly half way there. Tiring, but rewarding. And yes, I researched what to do to clean and restore it! (Many thanks to past and current contributors, of course) I'm basically saving the frameset as most of the parts were toast (some were good enough to re-donate to the place I bought this from...for $40!)

For me, very slowly: 1984/85 Klein Performance. Multiple challenges:
1-DT shifter mounts won't take modern DT shifters.
2-Press-fit square taper BB long out of production.
3-27.2 seat post
4-FD has to be bolt-on (not braze-on, but bolt on).
5-Only crankset that has the proper "seat" is a Superbe Pro.
6-Nutted caliper mounting

Let's just say we're getting there....


NOT for me, but more important: A 2013 Trek Domane I'm re-building, so to speak, for a 70-year old lady to ride across the USA. Double to triple, with a budget. It's a challenge, but more about finding parts, rebuilding the bike, and making it disappear beneath her; so she can take it for granted for 3,000 miles and not worry about it.

I have this stripped down right now. I plan on just cleaning all the crud off, sanding the old paint off the wood rims. Get it back together and put some tires on it. I plan on this being a wall hanger.

I've been working on my Gazelle Grand Tourist last week, especially the racks and lights.


Wanted to keep the classic styling of the chrome lights but I love the beam that my B+M Cyo Premium throws out on my city bike. So I decided to try to combine both:

When I got my hands on a TMI headlight I noticed it was pretty much the same size as the Cyo so I took a gamble.


Removed the front glass and reflector of the old light before doing some careful test fits.


Did have to cut some bits here and there but it all came together with some foam and creative wiring.


The end result is really classy though. (I redid the wiring later)


Still works, even though I hooked it up to a single lead sidewall dynamo.

Not entirely happy with the handlebars though but that can wait until later.

- Finished up '84 292S Ross Signature
- late 70s Viscount Aerospce currently stripped to the frame. BB spindle ain't coming out, rear rim is toast, but the porthole chainring is nice & shiny!
- 2006 LeMond Poprad, stripped to the frame, awaiting acid bath for internal rust.
- '88 Ironman Master is next
- '89 Ironman Expert after that
- '87 Ironman (pink 48cm) is third

BB isn't too different from a Viscount/Lambert, is it? If so I can help. There's also a Superbe Pro crankset out in the barn looking for a new home.
