Debating about changing out the bars for a trekking style bar, if I could find a source for one here in Canada. Keep the same brake levers and shifters, get more positions....
Trekking bars are not that hard to find and most shops should be able to order them in... the bars on my Norco longbike were sourced locally for $20.00 and I can't believe I waited so long to add them.

Yeah, I'm thinking that Urbane has some Nitto bars, so they should be able to get some kind of trekking bars. I plan on doing the fork this winter, and will need to make some of the cables longer, I don't want to do that, then turn around in six months and do it again for a different bar position. If I can find one for $20 then I would do this all at once.

I need to see some pix of how people set up the trekking bars though, so I know where the various bits are supposed to go.... I have trigger shifters so I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Simple set up... had to shorten a few housings.

Some folks like to mount road levers on the forward part of the bars and installing integrated lever's / shifters would be pretty easy with these.

It took me 15 minutes to go from a flat bar with risers to the trekking bars.

norwood,

The seat tube measures out to be 56.5 c-c. The top tube measures almost 58 c-c which was stretching me out quite a bit. I currently have one of those Delta risers to get my handlebars higher, which works but looks ugly. I may try to switch to trekking bars over the winter and give those a try (without the riser).

thanks,
chris

It is. Seemed to work well for strapping my tent and ground cloth. I had to do a small amount of bending to get it to fit right. It was cheap but it does work.

1991 Schwinn CrossCut. The fenders came off a 3-speed roadster with 28" wheels that was brought back from Germany.

Looks great, Cycleheimer. I`ve never heard of a CrossCut- must not be many of them. FWIW, back on post 122 of this thread, Balindamood posted up pics of a very early burgandy colored Sierra with fenders scavenged form a different bike, and like yours, the fenders look like they had been there since day one.

I didn't realize those could be mounted to bikes with suspension forks. I have the OMM Sherpa, which is a good rack, but it would be nice to be able to have the weight down lower.

Here's mine: It's an early 90's Specialized Hardrock, converted on the cheap. The only new bits on it are the tires and brake pads. The fenders are off of a 70's Sears 3-speed.

Does this count as an MTB conversion? 1992 Trek 750 Multitrack. I added the North Road bars, Suntour Accushift bar end shifters, Brooks Flyer saddle, MKS touring pedals and Jandd Expedition rack. My longest trip on it to date is the KATY trail end-to-end in 2008.

Thanks. I was trying to come up with a flat bar touring/commuter that was quick, easy to pedal up hills, and comfortable to ride. Just needs some alloy "North Road" bars!

Whoa, now I`m confused! First, Heineken posted pictures of trigger shifters mounted on dropbars, then kknh3 put up barend shifters on Northroad bars. I thought both those combos were impossible. Ya learn something new every day!

The trigger shifters work great too! When I did it, I didn't know it was supposed to be impossible. Bar-ends would be nice, but these were free since they were already part of the bike.

Haha! Maybe it`s best not to know what`s "impossible" before you start! That`s how I ended up with indexed Shimano shifters running a Suntour derailler.

The conversion to the North Roads and bar ends was pretty easy. If I recall correctly, all I had to change was the "wedges" on the shifters. The Accushift wedges wouldn't fit into the bars. I swapped the wedges with those from some old Suntour ratchet bar ends I had. That worked perfectly. I also had to cut a groove in the bottom side of the grips to get clearance for the shifter cables. Add in the custom wire ties that I used to secure the cables to the bars and it was complete. The Suntour shifters work great with the Suntour cassette and derailleur of course.

On my KATY 08 trip, I broke my rear wheel and had to buy a replacement at LBS. All they had in stock was Shimano so I went with that. A little tweaking of the shift cable tension made the Suntour shifters and derailleur work satisfactorily with the Shimano cassette in the 4 or 5 gears that I needed to ride on the KATY. It wasn't great in the extreme gears, but more than adequate in the middle of the cassette. I rode 2 of the 3 days like that.
