Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My Dromarti shoes arrived today. They're for my commute, which is done in dress slacks, polo shirt and Dutch opa-bike.
What a quality shoe! I was afraid they'd be that cardboardy leather like our '70's Detto-Pietros, but they are strikingly supple leather, nearly a mm thick! They make my Sidi Ergos (which cost nearly twice as much) look like Crocs. Pa always said Italian shoes were for getting your pitcher taken in, and not for walkin', but these babies feel as broken in as two-year-old combat boots. Very happy with this purchase!
Be sure to order 1/2 to 1 Euro size up from your normal size.

I suppose I can see how you hipster-types would get confused, since it's what Dutch bikes looked like before they became cool.

What is unDutch about my bike then? (Pixels are a poor conveyor of sarcasm.)
The beer and the hills are better in Limburg. But I suppose you Northerners have the market cornered on marijuana, hookers and Arctic winds. Tot ziens!

Clipless, crate goes in the front, and it looks to be way too well looked after to be called an opoefiets.

Had to make some adjustments for the hills on my Southern California commute, and I love this bike far too much to ever let it fall into a state of disrepair. I've replaced the saddle and installed a cushier mattress for my wee dog.

(The 'cobblestones' in my yard are the closest I could find to Holland's beauties here in the American Southwest.)
It's great fun bicycling here because everyone assumes you are either Mormon or you lost your license due to DUI.

I purchased the Garmin 305 Edge @ Best Buy late last month. They were blowing them out for $75. I couldn't pass it up.

Raided the parts stash of one of the other riders in town. The guy is nuts - has 5 MTB, 2 TT bikes, and 2 road bikes in his apartment - and boxes of random bits (anyone need a DA 7900 front and rear derailleur? Just laying in a shoebox...). He used to run a hedge fund.

Picked up a bunch of used parts for my back up bike build: FSA K-force crank (used, needs new bolt on left arm), bottom bracket, DA 7800 11-23 cassette (used but plenty of life left), Deda Newton Shallow handlebars (new take off), and a couple of tires (used, but OK) and a pair of new Vittoria tubes (valves too short for his aero rims). Total HK$1000 (about US$130).

Judging from his Mom's reaction (the consternated lady on the TV screen at the right of the photo) someone's not going to be receiving his tuition-assistance check this month.

MY FIRST ROAD BIKE! Early-Late 80s Colnago Sport. Older style 8 speed durace. $600! Guy had it in his garage for 10+ years after he built it up with durace putting less than 100 miles on it. I had been planning on getting an OX Platinum True Temper frame but this was on craigslist for half of what I was going to pay for a frame. Needs a little more TLC. First on the list is the headset, stem, seat post, bars, and tires. Can any one tell me exactly what year this frame is? And if you can do that you can probably tell me if its an ISO or JIS headset size? And maybe you can throw in a few suggestions on a 1" threaded headset priced around $100-150. I'm going to try and buy carbon colnago bars and seatpost.

What's wrong with that headset? If you must replace it, king of course.

I just bought this beauty, but it turned out to fit only 650C wheels. No big problem, I'm going to either sell it along to someone else, or turn it into a fixie and find some 650C's after all. Not sure on that yet though...

Nah - King, Dura-Ace/600, or Campy Record. Cane Creek *might* still make one, too. King for bling, though.

Actually, if he's going to re-vamp anything on that bike, I'd start with the stem. Either go threadless with an EC90 or Alpha-Q or get a quality stem, like the Nitto Dynamic.
