Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Exercise/Cycling On The Last Weekend of February

So ... anyone getting out there and getting active?

This weekend isn't really working out for cycling for me. Weather and vehicle difficulties are conspiring against cycling.

It can't be that bad. I have to deal with 30 F degree temps and kamikaze taxis:

Ohio...temps in the upper 20's (I could handle that) but the roads are covered with snow and ice AGAIN. Seems every time I start to get a few short rides in, the snow comes through again. This is turning into a very long winter.

RacerOne, where abouts is Brazil. I'm right on the Indiana line around the Geneva, Berne, Indiana area.

it seems I have no excuse. I have to pay bills and run an errand bu I should ride. I know it. the roads are absolute cr*p though ... all torn up from recent weather and changing temperatures. been fantasizing about riding a favorite rail trail on Cape Cod for a quick (?) 50 miles. if not today tomorrow

SUNDAY - Cloudy. A chance of rain showers in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 40s. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40 percent.

Australia sounds very rugged. can you post pictures of the dirt roads you mentioned?

Back to snow this weekend...last weekend was a tease getting some warmish weather. This weekend is supposed to be off and on snow both days. So other than shovelling, all of my exercise will be indoors this weekend. Spin class this morning, and a 2-hour base miles spin class tomorrow morning. If I have time, I'll hit my weights this afternoon for some strength training....but I'm getting over a head cold, so I don't want to push it too much.

Can't wait for some consistently decent weather.

about 50mi. out to creedmoor outside of austin tx... i was up too late and cramped up when i met another roadie who suggested we ride a loop back to austin. i'm still getting used to the roads since i've been mainly running and training for the austin marathon.

I live way out in the bush. If I lived in town, like the town where I work for example, the roads are all paved and the town looks much like a North American town.

This is a set of photos of the immediate area where I live. There are several shots in there of the "roads" we use to get out of the bush and onto a paved road, in both dry and wet weather:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/1430288...7623277367498/

This is how we get out to a paved road. We keep the bicycles in the back of the van so we can go for a ride when we go out:

Here's a nice shot of part of the road ...

2 hours this morning, left it late, had to have a soak in an ice bath afterwards, totally, overheated. Drank enough but the sun was fierce.

Sat: 90 km group ride.
On bike at 6:30am. Dark, wet, incredible lightning and thunder. Took steel frame trainer bike out, thought it might attract lightning... make the ride more interesting.

Sun: Early morning MTB ride around local reservoir with my honey, then mid morning and afternoon ride on our funny little Raleigh 20s.

Mon: Tandem ride and walk group with my vision impaired stoker.

I was hoping to do an ~80 km group ride on Saturday and check out Nabetani Touge (~100 km round trip, pretty big climb) for the first time on Sunday. Rain on Friday and Saturday nights cancelled the group rides, but the roads were dry by afternoon. On Saturday I did an easy (anticipating a hard group ride on Sunday) 50 km on the local rolling hills route. Went a bit further on the same course for 60 km total today... easy again since I'm going to wake up early and head for Nabetani tomorrow. Bit of a bummer, but the temps have been good (mid 50s - mid 60s F) and "nasty 20 mph headwind on the last 10 km heading home" season finally seems to be over, so riding has been good.

Saturday: moaning and sighing in the sofa about the vast amounts of frozen water coming down.
Sunday: 3 hours of great (very slow) riding on partially cleared forestroads, the snowing has stopped for a while.

Supposed to be up to 65 in central Florida this afternoon... but with WNW winds up to 25 mph. The bike team is heading out to do 40 miles on a local MUP. The ride up may be a bit of a struggle with the breezy conditions but I'll bet the ride back is fun!

did about 4 and a half hours on dirt roads yesterday. It was just over freezing, and its snowed quite a bit the past week, so there was lots of spots of mud and puddles, or really soft slippery snow. Weather is about the same today. Might ride for about 2 more hours today. I'm at 35 hours in the saddle for the month as it stands.
