That really depends on the kind of riding you do, what kind of climate you ride in, and how well you maintain your bike. 2,200 miles is the minimum I'd expect from a well-maintained chain on a road bike.

Too many variables to go by mileage. Measure over a 10" - 12" length of the chain and put an inch mark on the ruler at one end of that length right on a specific part of the link (usually the center or edge of a pin). Then an inch mark at the other end should line up exactly with the corresponding part of the link there. If it's off by 1/16" or more then replace the chain. Otherwise keep on riding.

I go trough chains every 600 to 800 miles. I ride a lot of hills, bad weather, heavy and loaded bike, and I'm a pretty strong rider. I can haul it up to 30 mph on flat when I'm rested, no problem. Mechanic in my local LBS says that he didn't have anyone before who could wear out a chain that fast, and that consistent every time a new one is put on. I guess that's a compliment

I use one of these.. makes checking really easy.
PBK Chain wear tool
My chains go about 2000 miles or so.... works out to 2 or 3 chains'year total (spread over three bikes).
I luv the silence and smoooth of a shiny new chain.

If you replace the chain before it wears out you will never have to replace your cassette and chainrings. I change them at about 1000 miles. The more wear your chain gets the more wear the cassette takes.
