Los Angeles Bike Mechanic
I'm looking for a GREAT bike mechanic in Los Angeles, someone with a ton of experience working on older bikes. I have a mid '80's columbus tubed road bike with a strange size bottom bracket and now a seized stem. I'm going to be stripping the frame for a repaint and I don't want some ham-fisted hipster who's been bolting and unbolting parts for a year or two and fancies himself as some sort of zen wrench. It seemed like in Seattle every shop had some bearded master mechanic who really knew their stuff, but I just haven't come across that down here. Someone please inform me if I'm mistaken.

I got nothing for you unelss you want to come west. I always recommend Sukeun at Veloworx in Santa Monica (3102 Lincoln Blvd. near Navy; 310-584-9797). Nice guy, very adept mechanic, great old-school feeling shop.
Just for perspective, he's got a 70's era Campy Super-Record (I think) equipped Masi hanging on the wall. I suspect it was his bike from back in the day. Now he rides Di2.

DScott, I think I'll check him out, I'm in Santa Monica all the time so that's not a problem. I just never leave the basin.

Steve at OpenRoad in Pasadena has done well by me and many others on the East Side. Tons of old Italian (and other) bikes lying around the place (literally). Very honest guy and the shop's a trip.

Fresh Garbage
You can try the Bicycle Ambulance in Santa Monica. I believe they mainly work on old bikes, refurbishing them and selling them.

I use to have good luck with Hrach at Velo Pasadena.. He was a pro mechanic for many years and has been open for 20+ years

It's worth stopping by just to see his vintage bike collection, I still do not know how he got Lemonds 89 TT bike from the TDF
