Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How old is this bike?

Looks to be a good deal, at least better than the other crap I have been finding. Not crazy bout the paint scheme, but its only looks. Only thing I dont like is the (I am assuming here) shifters on the frame.

Good deal or no?

Very nice with the warranty.

Good deal if you are tall.

I had that bike which I bought in 1991 after I graduated college. It was about $500 new then so I'd say $300 is too much. I hAd white with red graphics which was nicer than this one and it had Suntour components.

Scrap my previous post, because I've done some more digging.
It could be a 1992. Either way, I figure it's a 1989 to 1992, because electric blue 1000s were available in that period

62 is a very large frame. Good if you're somewhere above 6'3"...

Indexed Suntour components mean replacing shifters, rear derailleur and freewheel when something wears out unless you don't mind going to friction shifting since Suntour isn't cross compatible with any other manufacturers and hasn't been made since the early 90s.

Otherwise, a sharp looking bike.

I'm wondering what "Warranty on all components" means. I'm not familiar with the Suntour Blaze group but if it came with the original bike and previous put the approximate at 15+ years then certainly the manufacturer's warranty would be expired.

I can't really speak to the value but it sure does look nice and performs like the "classic" it appears to be.

I'm 6'1", maybe its a bit tall for me. The bike shop said I could use most anything around a 60cm.

It looks nice, but I am going to see if he will come off the price some.

Also found this, he said he would take $150.

My dad's bike:

I think the white frames with red graphics were made sometime around '90 or '91 (I could be wrong of course)

Suntour has expired.

There's no warranty coverage for anything on that bike, including the frame (for someone other than the Original purchaser.)

I wouldn't pay more than $150 for that bike. Perhaps $200 if it was a really good fit, and they're weren't other readily available options in your area.

And I would be a bit reluctant to do business with a seller who is FOS.

I think the guy runs a small bike shop so it is his personal warranty that he is talking about. I was going to offer $150, then if he does not take it, I am going to go get that Giant in the other add I posted.

The dirt around that headset says to me the bike has more then 400 miles on it which really is no big deal except it puts the sellers reputation in question. I could be wrong though.

Ditto. The seller has been posting that bike for several weeks at $430. Also, he frequently (as in every other day) posts low to mid-range bikes and pitches them with the same annoying car salesman type pitch.

That bike in AL, apparently nice and cleaned up, ready to ride, assuming the consumables have reasonable wear left, would sell for $200-$250. The bike shop warranty may be worth something additional as well. How much? I guess that's your call after you meet him.

I would get the Trek ahead of the Giant, but only if he'll come down $100. I paid too much at $350 to reacquire my '89 Trek 1400 two years ago.

It is a 1990. https://www.vintage-trek.com/images/t...TrekSpecs1.jpg Look at that spec sheet.

I rode a 1988 Trek 1000 for years. Sold it in 2005. Got around 150 for it. Needed new wheels as the eyelets were failing on the Matrix rims.

This is one of the thermally bonded, made in the USA Treks. I loved mine, rock solid, but a bit harsh due to that. I liked it, because I have always been a clyde. Was alway 200 lb. or more. I could flex my steel Trek, this bike, not so much. Would not pay $400 for it, but $200 or so is a fair price for a clean 20 year old bike, it is has been well maintained. Look carefully at the rims. Look for cracks around the eyelets and look for wear on the braking surfaces.

Not worth it. You can get the same model level brand new for around $900. If he will come down more than $100, maybe.

The only thing I'd add is that 62cm bikes are not real common so if that is the right size for you then the availability of bikes in your size becomes a price factor.

Looks like people have nailed the age for you. I was going to guess late 80's through early 90's based on my recollection of riding partners from that time and the parts. SunTour stuff is very durable so even if the indexing becomes imprecise it should last forever in index mode.

Well, went and looked at the bike. It was in very good shape. No cracks around the spokes (although a TINY bit of corrosion), paint was pretty good for 20yrs old, only a few nicks. The rear derailleur had a scuff mark on it. Tires and breaks looked to be in nice shape, and both worked great. Rode fine, very smooth and a pretty decent fit. I asked would he take $200 and he said no. I asked if he would take $250 and he said no. Said he was not budging off of $300 at all.

So, I'm back on the hunt.

FWIW, here's my 1990 Trek 1400 with updates including STI:

An oldie but a goodie.

However, note that with this vintage you're limited to 7-speeds due to the narrower 126mm rear hub spacing. So finding replacement parts will be more challenging (forget about swapping wheels with your other modern bikes) than if you found a later model with 130mm rear spacing which would then be able to accommodate all the latest and greatest hardware.
