It wasn't a downhill, it was basically flat where I attacked, just a few little ripples. Without a computer showing the grade you would have no idea that it was just a tiny tiny bit down.

It was swimmer that said he attacked on the descent. Last year the winning break took off on the descent so not altogether crazy though.

It depends on the situation. I won a race last year attacking down from the top of a hill.

Nice video umd. How'd the guy in the Herbalife kit finish? Couldn't see you obviously, but he looked pretty strong.

it's kind of funny to see on the screen. not making fun of you as i've also been known to make those desperate looks for help!

Yea to clarify, I attacked after the downhill on the flats. On this course, the turnaround is about 500 meters after the top of the climb. I came into the turnaround first and saw most of the field was already pretty strung out. So I gunned it and pushed the pace really hard on the downhill to open up gaps. It seemed to work, because after everyone got back together on the flats, they seemed tired and the pace slowed considerably. That's when I saw the opportunity to attack. Yea, it was a little early (40 miles to go), but there's nothing wrong with being aggressive, haha.

I don't think there is any way to do it with the software I have. Someone on the dashware forums asked and there was some hack that may work, but it's already pretty cluttered. Anyway, here is the elevation profile of the lap with power & HR.

He was strong. No idea how he finished, I don't know his name and I didn't stick around to see the results.

Thanks. I understand, no offence taken

It was pretty funny to see. I hate the sound of the moto, you know you are pretty much done for. I was just looking around to see if anyone else was back there. Nada.

As long as you got the legs to back it up... I obviously didn't but I'm still glad I gave it a go. It was a fun experience and better than just sitting in all day.

Wow - no wonder you couldn't sustain the breakaway with your HR banging against 180bpm for 20 minutes! Interesting to see the breakdown of where the break started, got caught and was over.

Thanks for putting it all up there!

Cheers

You do realize that 180 doesn't mean much right?

My max was 207, and I was just about threshold at 180...

Yeah, absolute HR numbers don't mean much... but it does so happen that 180 is fairly high for me and I was pegged at like 183-184 for a few minutes. My max is ~190.

I think my max is also 190, its the highest its ever gone. But you never know....Ive only hit it once. When I start hitting 180+ it gets hard.

When I hit 190, I was doing a group ride at 8am. We were going up the first hill of the ride, all of a sudden I just blew up. Everyone started passing me, and I looked down and read 190. I rode 98% of that group ride alone. And I get lost very easily. I had to use that very un-detailed black and white map on my 305 to find my way back to my car.

my absolute HR numbers are really high... and that doesn't mean much.
I've stayed above 180 for periods of more than 30' at a stretch, my max recorded HR is 204 (recorded a bunch of times at 202/203)

the real question is how well can your body function at that point - watts/cognition/etc.

LOL - looks like a lot on the graph - it's right up the top!

;-)

I just started playing around with my HRM, but it doesn't record so it has limited utility as far as looking at info goes.

Thinking about getting a Garmin 500 - current wireless computer doesn't do cadence or HR - would be good to keep better track of my riding. Plus I like the Garmin website to see what was happening during races.

Cheers

my max is around 195 (and I have hit it a few times in tough races lately)

last night I hit it staying in the front group on the first big hill. After that there was a surge and I just couldn't hold the wheel. It was sort of where the race unraveled for me, needing a recovery period and just not getting one.

180 is probably doable for an hour TT with the right rest and eating. everyone is quite different. certainly I have done half-hour TTs at well above 180
