For 5000K buy a bike... with a plane attached. For $5000, save some money and buy a late model used carbon top of the line bike and put the savings into carbon wheels. I used craigslist and ebay to score an 08 Bianchi 928SL last May that was like new and some brand new Reynolds SDV66's all for under $4k.

I say you test the theory:
It isn't about the bike... score this puppy and ride the snot out of it.

datlas had the first and correct response. Unless you poop money and are on a high fiber diet, buy a good quality bike for around $1,500 and save the rest for schwag and upgrade-itis.

What kinds of things are important to you? Climbing ability, speed on the flats, looks of the bike, ride quality, durability?
I am partial to a few carbon manufacturers that can build a custom bike to any geometry or ride quality you like. For that money, take a look at Crumpton, Parlee and Calfee.

You can get some really nice wheels for 5K and then save money for when you can afford a new frame!

Just a guess but somehow I don't think the OPs in need of a power meter.
For $4K (maybe less) you can get a Giant TCR Advanced 1 with SRAM Force.

I ride about 100-125 miles per week. Ride alone half the time and with one or two other riders the other times. Basically flat ground and usually a fair amount of wind. I like a responsive ride. My geometry is very close if not exact on many bikes. What are the suggestions out there.
Only you can make out a list of what you already have and what you want more. Say, you have some wheels but you would like to try out some nice carbon clinchers. Rather than using the 5k as a guide, try another way, a ride list. Then work backwards into the 5k to see where it goes.

I think you're going to be light.
Competitive Cyclist has the Infinito w/ Di2 for $7090. Add $1,000+ for aero wheels and you're over $8,000. Even with internet deals you're not going to get that frame, aero wheels, and Di2 for $5,000.
