Bikes: 1981 Trek 613, Bianchi Ibex, Bianchi Fixed, Schwinn Tempo, nothing that would get stolen (sigh).

I'm surprised that there are that many characters in the s/n though. All the Super Sports from this period that I have seen had a much shorter number.

The seat tube decal was used on the early sixties Traveler model.

Ay, that was a typo. I'm 100% sure it's FG. But thank you for sharing the info on the traveler decal.

Sounds Like what I did with mine. I LOVE the Filet brazed Schwinns but was always disappointed in their choice of drive train and finishing parts... so I took a frame and ground off some of the cable guides and outfitted the whole thing in Campy derailleurs and brakes and put a NISHIKI 3 piece crank on it. Vroom Vroom! Not it's as close to a PARAMOUNT as I can ever get !!!! (PS... I used to have a '78 Superior and that was as close to a P-13 as I could get back in the day!)

Sweet bike! I'm normally neither a fan of Schwinn or Chrome bikes, but for some reason I love this one! Good find indeed.

Thanks, it has some bizarre charm. I can't wait to give it a full-tune up. Just a cleaning of the drive-train made a major difference.

Are there cases where old 27" wheels are better than newer 700s? I think this particular one has shimano 600 hubs and mavic rims, but I really know nothing about wheels except to be suspicious of ones with few spokes and that light is often better.

I'm sure it'll be a nice riding bike. Someone clearly put some work and $$$ into making it.

As for the wheels, I'm no expert, but from what I've read there isn't a huge reason to swap quality 27" for 700c other than perhaps tire choices. The size and weight difference isn't very much.

But tire choice is a legitimate motivator for some. I haven't changed for the sake of changing, and one of my favorite bikes has 27" wheels. It's sporting Panaracer Pasela tires, which I adore. I use the bike for trips up to 20 miles. They are not high performance, but they are quick and lively and comfy. If you want something better than that in 27" you're out of luck.

Bashermax, love your ride! And again, I want to thank everyone for their suggestions and clues about the origins of this bike.

I hate to ask for more advice, but before I clean it up (and wait for a sunny day to take some good photos), does anyone have any tips or warnings for a tune-up for this bike? I don't know how to treat chrome, and am horrified of opening up the BB. Avoid PB blast? Can I put polylube in the seat tube? I'm also scared to touch anything Campy.

I'm really starting to enjoy thumb friction shifters with straight bars. Don't know if anyone else feels that way.

I'm sorry to bump an old thread, but it's xmas!

I just have two questions.

1. How should I clean and polish this bike? I am hesitant regarding the paint on the seat tube.
2. What would era appropriate drop bars be? I'd like to get it a little closer to what it was born to be. Bar tape color recommendations?

I'd say these bars, a narrow Rando style thing that many Schwinns had. I should take a picture from dead on front so you can see the shape better.
I'd say that if a yellow Schwinn has yellow tape and a red Schwinn has red tape then a chrome Schwinn aughta have chrome tape, The clear red is pretty endeering on these, though.

I promised high-res pictures. Here they are, courtesy of Eric Baumann, an excellent photographer and cycling enthusiast.

Definitely the most interesting Super Sport I've seen.

Even though I'm a purist for originality, I'll have to say it's one of the most attractive of its breed - whoever did the frame modifications truly improved the whole package; this is the way the Super Sport should have been produced.

If Schwinn had been smart, they would have done this on the Sports Tourer as well. Lobbing off that kickstand (and replacing it with a proper bridge), and fitting those filleted seatlug ears makes it look that much more like a legitimate, upper-end touring frame.

I wish I could get my touring Trek chromed like this. Is it prohibitively expensive?
