9 spd Tiagra and 10spd cassette?

My co-worker has a 10speed cassette that he doesn't use. I can get it from him real cheap. Question is will it work? Can I configure the RD to ignore the last cog?

Also will a 9spd chain work as well?

No the indexing will be off. I believe the separation is 3mm for 10 speed cassettes. It's probably a little more than 3mm, which means you'll have some issues with the shifting.

To make it work, you would need a new rear shifter (but keep the current derailleur) and a new chain.

Unless you've got shifters that you can switch to friction mode, this won't work. You also need 10 speed chain, which is more expensive. 9 speed cassettes are cheap and plentiful.

Short answer is not with your existing shifter/der since the spacing between cogs is different.

Contrary to what everyone is saying I believe you can. However, you'll need a Jtek Shiftmate (model #2 I think) which will run you about $40.

Probably simpler just to get another 9 speed cassette.

It's the little silver gizmo between the end of the cable housing and the derailleur:

I think everyone is saying is just to slap it on and adjust the derailer it isn't going to happen. By the time you buy the parts that can make it work (and I agree with you that you technically could) best just to pony up the $ and buy the right cassette.

Yeah. Decided to not go with the 10spd. Sticking with good 'ol 9ers.
