Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's impossible to win the TDF as an American on anything other than a Trek.
Just read Lance Armstrong's book, "It's All About the Bike".

I love my Trek. It's a 1987 Trek 400 Elance and was actually made in the USA. I do love me some steel frame classics! But I do have to agree that the market has been more than flooded with them.

Mine hasn't failed me so i love my bike. I don't get what people say by everyone has a Trek, all i see are Specialized around here, not Trek. And even if everyone has one what exactly about that would make them bad bikes. Nothing wrong with Specialized either, i don't care what anyone rides, to each there own.

I wonder if Trek would ever do a limited re-run of their classic steel road frames in modern tubing, like Spirit for lugs? I feel that such a run, possibly made in the USA, would sell very well. Those frames had some cool features, like the chain-stay routed brake cable and fastback stays.

I've wondered about that as well. I'd even be willing to sign on to build some of them. And I still have some of the original Trek frame fixtures in my basement!

Treks....honestly - they just seem so damned generic, in addition to the fact everyone has them. They are the Mao coat of American road bikes.

There's a lot of Hyundai's out there, but I still bought one. Who gives a damn? It's a bike. Ride it. Enjoy it. No reason to be judgmental towards any certain brand "just because."

Well, seeing as how I just purchased yet another Trek, a 1999 5500 oclv with a full Campagnolo Record 10 group, I will have to reaffirm my love for Trek. No arguing they are great bikes!

Why do you say that? I had a Bianchi when i was younger, that was in the 80s. @ the time, that was the "holy grail" to me as far as bikes were concerned. That bike was the best bike i ever owned....course I tinkered with it alot, so it NEVER broke down, or anything. Have they cheapened the brand quality wise over the years or something?

Seriously(as i dont know), why are they worse than Trek?

1) Realize that Bianchi is Italian for "Schwinn"

Bianchi has traditionally made good bikes, some very good bikes, but it was always more of a mass producer, than a high end speciality line, such as Colnago, etc.

2) In the 1970's, there were precisious few high end light weight bike available in America. With the first bike boom in the early 70's Bianchis were trule exotic next to Varsity's and Continentals, leading to a distorted impression of Bianchis by most Americans.

3)In the 80's and thereafter, a good number of Bianchis started to be mass produced in Asia and lost a lot of the made in Italian luster.

All that said. my first "good" bike was a Bianchi.

Trek is overpriced for what you get, I regularly pass them on my motobecane IS. They are not faster unless the engine is better.

Surely if everyone has them that has to say something right? They are very awesome bikes!

Did you know that when you buy a bike there is a small fee attached to it from Trek? It is put towards a budget to help promote and endorse cycling and getting more people on bikes! Really neat actually.

With that said, I love Trek. I have a T1 for a city bike and a 6 series Madone for a road bike.

Update on the bike that started this thread - since the photos have disappeared, here is one from back in '06:

The frame currently rests comfortably unbuilt. I've built it twice and had 2 seasons of use with it since '06 and the frame is still nearly perfect. The paint is amazing. I'm not sure I will ever build her again.

The parts in the photo are long gone with the exception of the Mike Garcia custom built wheels, which I currently have on my main ride. I have always loved these wheels.
