50 Today

Finally I get to post in this forum, 50 today! I have been an avid cyclist for the last couple of years, currently riding 25mi. - 45mi. daily. I am trying to get myself ready for a solo century, longest ride so far this year is 53 mi. Can anyone give me advice as how far I should ride before I attempt this?

Happy Birthday! I'll be joining you in exactly three months. I got an early jump on this forum because I've been "trying on" ever since I turned 49.

I'm a newbie, too, so no advice but good luck on your century!

If you can do 65 miles fairly easily without a lot of aches and pains the next day, you're ready already. The day of the century, just back down yuo speed one full notch and enjoy the ride.

If you can do 25 to 45 daily, 100 will be a piece of cake. Just rest up a couple of days before.

Happy Birthday. As I am new to road riding, I can't offer any insights on centuries, but I am experienced at being 50+ - it ain't bad.

Thanks all! The original plan was to do the century on "the" day, but as it is a long weekend here in Canada the traffic on a Friday to cottage country is terrible and the plan was to ride to my cottage which is 100 miles north of Toronto. I also am not yet confident enough to tackle it, so I will take your advice Tyson and do 65 - 70 miles before I do it, I thinlk I will be mentally and physically ready then. I'll keep you all posted.

What is the point of doing a 100miler as a training ride for a 100miler? There is none.

What is required is constant riding- nonstop for about 3 to 4 hours. It will not be the distance that will get you- it will be the butt pain and the body ache. Train for that and 100miles is no problem.

My big 100 miler is in 3 weeks time. 12 hours offroad, and the biggest training I have done is 40 miles on the road but blasted in 2hrs 30minutes. Won't be enough to stop the legs falling apart, or the feeling that I am sitting on the stem instaed of the saddle, but it will delay that feeling.

Happy Birthday!

If you ride 45 miles a day without problems, you should not have any problems with a century. Hydrate, eat and ride.

Happy birthday!!!!
If you can ride 45 miles with no problem, you should be able to double that for one day. Like the others said, stop for eating and stuff, and it will also relieve your "seat".
