i once saw an internet security guy on the news demonstrate how insecure the internet is for personal info. the news channel challenged him to get as much info as he could starting with just the name of a person and in half an hour he had enough on him to get a mortgage and open a bank account. he started from social networking sites and went from there.

They start by going in to their email addresses. They do this by clicking "forgot password," and often they can guess the security questions based on other information you have on sites. Once inside email, they can pretty much reset any password to any other account you have registered under that email address.
