Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Funny sponsorship package on their jersey. Looks like a Motorola "M" over the right breast instead of Merckx's EM. 1990 was the last 7-Eleven year, and that pic is the last stage of the 1990 TdF so maybe Morotola had already announced it's sponsorship deal?

I so wanted a pair of LeMond drop-ins. I already had the Scott full tri bars, the LeMond clip-ons, etc. I was such a LeMond lackey. I did question the design, but I still wanted them because LeMond rode them.

When they disappeared I figured that they had become illegal.

Hoonved came on as a sponsor in 1986 (I think) when 7-Eleven went to Europe.

I rode with a guy last week who designs for Alpha Q. He was experimenting with a off shoot of the scotts. It uses a Carbon bar that is bonded into the handlebars. The bar is bonded about 4 inches from the end of the drops and connects to both sides of the handlebars. Basically just a straight carbon bar that runs just in front of the head tube. It looked a little funny but I guess you could get pretty aero with it if you were flexible enough.

Uhhh...yeah...Hoonved. Why are you talking about Hoonved?? My comment had nothing to do with Hoonved. You're looking at the wrong part of the jersey. Try in the green field just below the American Airline patch. You'll see a Motorola "M"...it will be in the location where there is the Eddy Merckx logo on the link you pasted.

Since you brought Hoonved up though here's one for you: what's the Swiss version of their name that was used on uniforms during the Tour of Switzerland?

It's the motor boys. Greg Lemond would have kicked our collective asses on a Schwinn Stingray.

Check out the bikes they were doing the Tour de France with in the 1940's some time.

Not saying he wouldn't. I was just thinking about how LeMond described in his book how much the early carbon forks flexed while braking. Combined that with the known poor baking performance those Campy calipers were known for and I just had this image of the descent being a very interesting one.

At least he had the drop ins.

I was clued into it during a sale of one of Andy Hampsten's jerseys from the tour of Switzerland. The only ones that were ever made with that spelling were team issue for that race (over multiple years).

I loved that stuff. You could re-use it and re-use it. Perfect for the days of quill stems. I was a kid with little dough and that stuff was cheap enough I could change the look of my bike as often as I wanted.

I think I used to be able to buy it for under $2.50.

You know, come to think of it, there was another incarnation of these bars. They had a "bridge" that joined the lower "flats" of the drop-in after they jutted forward again. It created a little aero position in the center of the bar, just under the stem. I googled a bunch of combos for a pic, but could not find one. Anyone remember which "drop-in" those were? I had a pair once....a really long time ago.

I remember those as well - they made them look like aero bars. Certainly a lot of twisted and curvy metal on those! I don't remember the name though....

Never used these bars but I thought the extra positions looked really cool. Is anybody willing to sell them? Never could find them anywhere.

I used to run these with Off the Front bar tape. Loved that stuff. Don't think you can get it any more.
