Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise - March 5/6

It's March already!!

Autumn in Australia starts on March 1, and the first few days of autumn have been very autumn-like ... quite chilly. But today was lovely ... sunny, light winds, and the temperature reaching a high of 24C.

Friday - a light easy 20 km ride up our usual evening ride route. Neither of us was feeling up to much more.

Saturday - a fast and good 47.7 km ride from Taggerty to Marysville. We hadn't ridden that route in ages ... months ... and thought it might be nice for a change, and it was.

When we finished the ride, we went past an older couple who stopped to talk for a moment. We had brought back good memories for them ... they used to ride tandem, with a sidecar for the kids, back in London.

Bloody awful temperatures up here in Townsville today. I did an early ride on the MTB mainly on road but took a gravel path for about 12 kilometers to a wildlife viewing area on the town common. Ended up beig a 43k ride. I feel like I could have done more but it was just starting to get way too hot.

Looking forward to feeling some of those "crisp" mornings. :-)

We've been getting a lot of those crisp mornings lately ... overnight lows in the single digits. I've had some chilly walks to work this past week.

Sunday - Rowan and I just got in from a 161 km (100 mile) ride on the tandem ... in 7 hours and 48 minutes! That's the fastest century I've done in ages ... years, perhaps!

It was a perfect day - bright and sunny, started cool (13C) and warmed up (25C), hardly any wind. The terrain was generally flat with a few gradual hills, and a couple more challenging ones.

We did a out and back "loops" - out one road and back home, out to Lake Eildon and back, and repeat.

So ... That's my BIRTHDAY century done!!

Assuming it's your birthday? Happy Birthday!

Yesterday, I was the ride host for a 100k Populaire. My first time to do something like that, so it was a learning experience. It turned out to be cold and windy, so turnout was low, but went fine otherwise. I did the lanterne rouge to stay with another rider who has slowed down. Today, I'll be riding around the area.

34 miles including a 5 mile 3000ft climb. Here in Tucson it got pretty warm, I've got to start putting on sunscreen I'm a little red.

55.8 miles Saturday with a short 1.5 mile climb at around mile 9. Hoping to get another 50 in today but now I'm not sure. Major winter storm is coming in with 18 - 20 inches forecasted. Rain/snow mix right now and quite warm but they are dropping sand all over the roads right now and that will just be a mess. Still debating what to do.

On Saturday I rode into town on my commuter bike and took the bike on the train to visit my sister- a total of about 18 miles of riding. As I left her house Sunday morning to ride to the train station for the trip home a sign at a bank was flashing the temperature- 56〬F. Every once in a while I do a "ride the temperature" ride. And since that's not only my age, 56, but the number of miles I was from home (roughly- had to ride a few more to round it off) I decided to skip the train and ride the snow lined roads home. It was gorgeous.

3/5, Half hour on the trainer. Planned on longer, but had to cut it short

3/6 Hour on the trainer, with only half of that being a quality workout. The first half was me adjusting the front and rear derailleur while on the bike...add another half hour to that and it took me close to an hour to adjust them

Well it's Sunday now and I went out after all. Just a quick 20 jaunt in steady rain. Nice though as the temps were in the high 30s. That is warm for this time of year.

Great weekend for me.

Saturday: 68 miles with my favorite ride friends including about 45 minutes of it team time trialing to make it to the mid-ride coffee shop before they closed. Three of us are really well matched, which makes it super fun to work together, but I think the other gal got a little worked. Cold and overcast, but I got the clothing right so it was OK.

Sunday: 73 miles, started with my women's club ride, left them at mile 28 to meet some other friends and join their ride. Again cold and overcast.

Still no climbing though, it's just too cold for me to brave the descents. Soon I hope, maybe after this week's snowstorm? Vision646 - I'm jealous.

Friday night, put catchers gear on and caught my 13 yo travel baseball pitchers for 1.5 hours. Sat morning, played hockey and rode on spin bike for 80 minutes then lifted weights. Sunday spin bike for 60 minutes, washed my car and played basketball. Still have a hockey game tonight...

I rode 4 miles to see if a group ride that hasn't been happening might have any riders today. As I turned into the parking lot, I didn't see this cable stretched across the driveway and rode right into it.

The bike stayed on one side of the cable, and I wound up on the other side on my back on the pavement, with my feet still tangled in the bike. So I guess I did more of a dive and twist than a proper endo. Anyway, I'm sore all over, especially my back, but don't seem to have broken anything. Three of the 11:30 ride guys were still in the parking lot and came to check on me, and one of them brought me home. Broke the front fender on the bike, and that seems to be the major bike damage.

I hope you feel better soon, SH. They should probably have a larger triangle or something on that!
