Sophie's Choice

Heading out to Ft Davis this weekend to do what's, in my opinion, the best race, stage or otherwise in Texas. Then I'm going to keep going. Staying in SoCal for a week or two, doing the Santiago Canyon TT, then hitting the HDC for some track. Sunday will be something called the LA circuit race, which I guess is going from studio to studio pitching a really bad sitcom. If I hang an extra weekend I've got a choice of a crit or TT plus something called the Devil's Punchbowl, which would draw protesters from Kansas if it was held here in TX.

Ain't we got fun.

I'm rolling the new travel trailer, it's an R-Pod (visions of a nekkid Brooke Adams pointing out Donald Sutherland) complete with a new memory foam mattress and real sheets.

The two Chessies were not included but will be included.

I plan on climbing my ass off while I'm there. Form is coming, weight is 1.5 Kilos from not needing an MRI because my liver's right here (points it out).

All of which is a meandering route to June. I had targeted the NoCal/NV TT as my "A" race this year. Never did a 40k with ripping form on a fast course and this was my chance to break my current PB of 53. Actually shatter if my calcs were right.

But the bastardos scheduled it the same weekend as Tulsa Tough, and I'm a sucker for seeing myself on not one, but two jumbotrons in front of a huge crowd gettin it done (and not melting like the last time I did it) with my teammates.

Sophies Choice? Which kid would you kill and why, in 100 words or less.

Your description of the LA Circuit race is not far off. IMHO it's the most boring course we have. Out n back on a closed highway with a 180 at each end. Expect a 15-20mph direct headwind/tailwind coming off the ocean. I would try the UC Irvine crit which is new. It would most likely be a smaller field and a tougher race.

You will accomplish your goal of climbing your ass off @ Devil's Punchbowl.

Sophie's Choice?
I would kill the TT. Bad conditions could ruin your chances. Once you see your ass up on the Jumbotrons the memory of your "A" race PB dream will fade.

William Styron lived in my hood in VA. Although a bit before my time.

Kill Tulsa. You've done it. Take on a new challenge. You only live once. Experience everything you can.

This. The area around the course is pretty nice. My teammate is the RD and he's confident it will be a tough race. I guess it's a long steady uphill drag to the finish line. On the other hand, LA Circuit makes industrial park crits seem riveting.

Shatter it. Go for the 50+ national record. Also, come to Moriarty over labor day weekend.

Damn...Nice to be retired! I retired in poverty at age 31, but started running out of money ~12 years later and have since needed to work. But I have fond memories...

There's something to be said about seeing yourself on not one, but two jumbotrons lap after lap after endless lap. I don't think it would ever get old.
Then again it's Tulsa in June.
But they did a great job of videoing a lot of last year's races and posting them on Vimeo, assuming they do the same this year you could always watch your races over and over and over again in the off season.
Then again it's Tulsa in June.
On the other hand very few spectators at TTs, no jumbotrons, no videos to watch in the off season.
Then again better weather, better scenary, State Championship.
I'll never understand the allure of TT'ing, but I suspect you'll be in Sattley come June.

Sattley is spitting distance from the mountain home. On the other hand Tulsa will be getting the band back together....(cue Blues Brothers car chase)

I'd skip Sattley. Say you do a 51:xx or even a 50:xx, it still isn't even fast enough to be the best time of the day. Tulsa is like that thing they have in france.

Dude, I don't really need to type it do I?

I'm going to freaking Tulsa. I barely do any races and I'm going to Tulsa. They'll all rue the day JPB came to Tulsa to race 40+.

It doesn't have to be the fastest time of the day. Anything better than 50:35.33 = National Record... at least until someone beats it. Based on the list below, that hasn't happened in awhile.

40 km
30+ 47:35.37 John Frey, Moriarty, NM, 9/2/90
35+ 47:48.69 Kent Bostick, Moriarty, NM, 9/2/90
40+ 48:25.48 Kent Bostick, Moriarty, NM, 9/1/96
45+ 49:57.98 Kent Bostick, Dunlap, TN, 6/6/99
50+ 50:35.33 Scott Hennessy, Moriarty, NM, 9/5/99
55+ 51:56.30 Scott Tucker, Moriarty, NM 8/31/97
60+ 52:42.65 Scott Tucker, Moriarty, NM 9/5/99

NRC crit series. Downtown twilight course. The course with the hill in it. The best racers in the country. Prime after prime after prime. Big crowds. Beautiful women.

Or a sweaty TT.

No contest.

I really like the footage of the Tulsa Race. So, based on that and absolutely no other criteria at all I say, do Tulsa.

24 words.

Plus, it's right next to the New Midtown Adult Superstore.

That usually means groceries too. Is this decision really up in the air?

Although I'm a TT guy, with that Tulsa course going right past the Adult Superstore, I don't see that you have any other choice.

Sattley

Pros - Fast, flat out and back course at 5000 foot altitude usually good weather. Ideally suited for PRs and opportunity to win a coveted bear jersey.
Cons - 40K ITT on a boring course, may have a lot of wind on the inbound leg = lots of suffering. 50 - 54s go out later with more chance of wind. Venue is spartan.

Tulsa

Pros - mass start, glory, porn
Cons - potential bad weather and no bear jersey.

I like to suffer so if I were you, I would do Sattley.
