Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anybody tried these or weighed them?? Figured I would post here for a better chance of someone having some experience. Thinking about getting a pair.

Just insalled them and weighed the bike. These bars knocked 1/4lb off my bike.

I think I'm close to done. I plan on some skewers, seat and possibly Planet-X brakes. If I do all three, I'll get it down to about 15.2 lbs.

Unfortunately, any other weight savings will be expensive like replacing my Light Action Speedplay's saving maybe 40 gr., or getting some Red shifters, only 25 grams, but I also want them. A carbon stem would save me about 20 gr. but cost $100 or more. I could get some lighter tires, but I love my GP2k's and that would be only about a 30-40 grams savings. A Red cassette would knock off 70 grams and that is worth considering.

I'm not sure if I'll get below 15lbs. I have been lucky so far and gotten great deals. I've dropped 2 lbs off my bike and invested about $400. It looks like I'm going to have to spend 3 times that to loose the other .85 lbs.

But, my bi-polar forces me too trudge on.

Nice bars PC - they look a lot like my Cutters but are a tad lighter. My Giant weighs about the same now as well and will probably end up at the same weight once I replace the shifters and RD. I had to torque on my cutter bars more than I wanted to to keep them from slipping. Might go invest in a torque wrench and some no slip carbon paste later today. Hate to over torque uber light carbon.

When you guys start removing the paint off your frames I'll know you are serious weight weenies. I've also not seen any drillium and this thread is 36 pages long.

Moment of truth; could someone total up their purchases and divide the total by the number of grams deducted?

no serious weight weeniesm from me... i just like stock parts/groups/frames that are light to normal weight.

most of the guys in this thread are actually just reducing previously "heavy bikes" [above 18lbs] to modest weight savings resulting in 16lbs-15lbs final weights. nothing crazy weight weenie.

I finally bought some stuff from frairwheel... cheap stuff though. a Tune Gum Gum expander and a Al top cap.

total weight savings is 35g over my previous top cap/bolt/expander combo so it comes out to a little under $1 a gram for that upgrade

I got a quote once to strip my frame bare. It wasn't worth it.

runningDoc told you right. i wish i had the funds to go crazy weight weenie but i dont. i just wanted to take my cheap heavy bike and turn it into something that wasnt a pig. ill see if i can get you a ruff estimate of $/g. for a while i was doing really go with that but as you get lighter it gets more expensive.

ok ruff estimate of what ive spent is $2050 for 1882g. $/g ratio would be 1.089 so not to bad. from here on out it would be hard to save that much.

In regards to the calories on the garmin 500 - because of possible rain I didn't ride my 'A' bike which has a power meter and I also didn't wear my HRM strap. It had my calories for my team club ride around 3800. The week before....with power meter, HRM - 2500

P C thats a good ratio. i was doing about the same when i was at that point. it just gets harder to save that much pr/$ the lower you go. plus i was also brand picky so that didnt help me any. if you can save 1g pr $ though you are doing good if you ask me.

i was going to either shell out for the extralite expander [fairwheel] or the generic ultralight expander they have on torontocycles but they were all sold out. So i settled for the tune gum gum which fortunately is a lot cheaper.

I was actually going to ask the guys here their experience(s) with the Tune Gum Gum. Mine will be here in a couple days so I'll give a report after the rides this weekend.

The Gum Gum doesn't come with a top cap i think. Thats why I added a light AL cap to the order. Theoretically the top cap/screw/expander has little effect on the headset tightness (which comes from the stem bolts). But real life situations can always differ (which I suspect it will). I'm preparing myself that the gum gum expander might loosen and not keep the headset tight permanently.

hopefully it will work out.

I didn't keep track of my $ to weight ratio, but it was probably pretty descent. Almost all of my parts were $100 or less. Only things I spent more on were shifters and cranks (and got a killer deal on the cranks). Also, you need to subtract the money I made selling my used parts off. I dropped two bikes from the 18 pound range to the 15's for way less than $1k I'm sure, and probably not too much more than $500.

Overall, what do you think was your best purchase in regards to price/performance?

im not really sure but a few parts do really shine. they are just different in thier own way really. i guess first would be the wheels but thats obvious. SRAM Rival shifters were a major improvement for me and the same with the Force crank (that was a supprise at how much better it was). i was also very impressed with the PlanetX brakes and i couldnt live without me SLR saddle. the finish on the 3T and KCNC parts is amazing. really im very happy with every part i put on my bike. i dont regret any of them and they all exceeded my expectations.

I would say the Topolino wheels with the 105 to Force swap a close second. I really love these wheels.

I have the Extralite Ultrastar expander on my Trek. It works great. If you want a good top cap the POP carbon 4g unit Fairwheel sells is an excellent piece. I highly recommend it.

I was just really curious as I have the ACR 2.0 and was thinking of swapping out a few things. Any suggestions other than the wheels? I have some new bars and a saddle already.

I've had some really nice purchases. My Chinese carbon saddle for $35 (100 grams). My KCNC post was $80 and was 114 grams once I cut it down (if you do the math my saddle + post = 214 grams). My wheels were probably the best move though. I got some Kinlin 30mm rim for $80/pair and some Fomula hubs for $100. So for under $200 I got a set of 1400'ish gram wheels - and they roll silky smooth. Great riding wheel. Unfortunately the guy who built them used alloy nipples, which is why I broke a nipple/spoke on Sunday.

If I could get a deal like that on wheels, I'd slap the cash down in a second. Gratz.
