Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bottom of Hollow Oak Drive climb in El Dorado Hills, CA. I liked the name of the cross street:

Part of one of my favorite climbing rides:

Ummm...I hope this isn't in bad taste. Your thoughts?

The "Bike Safety Forum" sign was added after the ghost bike was placed there.

UK I feel ya. My wife doesn't get home till late with the EOG testing coming up so it's either a nice dinner with the family or try to get a ride on the road. I'm stuck on the trainer, haven't quite got the nerves yet to try the rollers.

Is that actually the state exam required to pass that grade? I don't think that's been used in California for over 30 years. Here in Los Angeles, we just pass the kid until s/he's in 12th grade and wondering why they can't graduate.

lol... yeah.. Unfortunately now your job retention is also based on whether or not your students pass. We find out tomorrow if she gets to keep her job because of the budget.

Ugh. Sometimes I wonder who's supposed to take the test: students, or their teachers. All this is going to lead to is teachers trying to use clout to get the underperforming and unmotivated kids out of their class, and those stuck with them will start encouraging them to cheat. At least as a music teacher, they're not rating me by standardized test scores, but my success is on display for all the community to see on a semi-annual basis.

I probably won't know if I will have a job in September until some time over the Summer, and at that point, they could place me anywhere in the district... which could mean up to a 2 hour commute.

Not bad taste, but I'm torn on things like ghost bikes and the upcoming "Ride of Silence" we are having in my town. On the one hand its good to raise awareness of bikes on the road and safety. On the other hand, I feel that it further promotes the idea that biking on the road is dangerous and that we should just stick to the parks and stay off the roads.

I feel ya. Stuff like that already happens here. One of my wife's co workers has yet to have a group of kids below the 'AG' level. She doesn't even know what it's like to have to teach kids. Yet my wife, year after year, gets kid after kid with some kind of socio-economic challenge. By Dec. she's ready to quit d/t the stress of trying to get these kids 'on level.'

They're basing the budget job cuts completely on point based system instead of performance. +1 for being a coach, or a group chair and so on. So because she has so little time outside of class to do anything else she may lose her job. If she does get to keep one she may get transferred to any of the other schools. At least we're finding out early. The end of September is way to long to wait. But if she gets the slip and we decide to move we've both agreed that the new location has to be cycling influenced. She's tired of me complaining about having no one to ride with.

My thread contribution

I had Scotty engage Warp Drive.

I shot the front wheel with the DroidX while riding at 20 or so.

It's an odd shot, but that's how it came out.

When I got home from a ride last fall I went to take a picture of the bike on my new roof rack...

And when I got closer I found a bee on a mouse head stuck to my frame.

How about that?

Here's an explanation. Basically, it takes a small amount of time to save the whole picture, and the scene moves during that time.

It happens with video too:
