Davis - less vert, familiar course, well attended, several hours drive
Central Coast Double - more vert, unknown course, fewer riders, but start is a half hour away from home
Closer wins! Have fun and be safe Spring!

Well, uhhh, darn it all. I just volunteered for the DMD and watch other people doing a much harder double and being happy they did it.
I did the Diablo Century with 6500 feet of climbing and felt good afterwards
I've done a few of 60 milers with over 5000.
So, I'm on the edge. I need to do something next Sunday that will send me a message and tell me "do it" or "you are crazy, you are not ready."
Looks like I have until May 14 to jump or bail....

The hotels they mentioned are pricey, and sold out ... so just might want to book a hotel first, then if you decide not to do it, cancel. Just a thought.

It it to early to start conjecturing / worrying / obsessing about the weather? What's the best (or any) long range weather forecast site?

OK, darn it. Enough of your constant harassment. The emails. The midnight calls, the chalk writing on my sidewalk.
So I signed up. I'm in. Yikes.

Double check to make sure you still have a reservation, ok? We don't want a repeat of what happened at Solvang, do we?

Here it is 4 days after my DMD completion
and I have not had any desire to throw a leg over my bike.
Yesterday I even chose 3 hours of mowing and weed whacking over a ride.
That was with Mrs. O encouraging me to go for a ride too.
That DMD and all the intensive training left me needing a break both mentally and physically.
Plus I was epically behind on yard work with all the training I did this spring for DMD.
Priorities were: Family, Work, Training, Yardwork all spring. Somehow yardwork kept getting left out.
Last night I felt really good about the way the yard looked
and I am feeling ready to start riding again.
Nothing stokes my commitment fires like having something booked and on the calendar.

Wonder what the weather will be like this year. I figure that I am in better shape going into this than previous years, so maybe I should be able to survive the heat on Cobb Mtn this time around (but I'm not banking on it).
I think I'll have to do the cram your training in the weekend before the double (since I'm on-call this weekend). Hopefully my daily commute and hill climbs will make up for it.

MyLilPony want to do the Sunrise Century the Saturday before the Davis Double. I'm thinking yes, but a bit worried that, at my extreme age and general lack of fitness, it might not be the best idea. Then again...
So, weigh in: Old guy recovery time after century for a double. Is a week enough?

Do it! Besides, it's only 8k feet. I'm just in it to finish it. Don't care what time I put in.

I know a guy that is 85 and he still rides Centuries. I have seen him beat some guys half his age up the hard side of Patterson Pass with my own eyes.
He did a 100 mile Dublin - Hamilton - Mines Rd - Back to Dublin last fall.
Another guy, age 72 was our ride leader on the Nifty Ten Fifty. As in "follow me, I ride this course all the time and have it memorized"
I know you can do Sunrise and do Davis. No tennis that week though. That is an order.

Ditto. Just take a look at the CTC site, and look at the age of some of the winners. One of my friends from Sierra Madre, Clem, has done about 40 or so doubles, and he's in his 70's, but still fast.

Weather should be warm. Hotels also located in Woodland, which is only a few miles north of Davis. I'll see you at the last rest stop at Plainfield Fire Station. I'll check you to make sure you're not suffering from heat illness.

There is not enough mindless chatter here about this upcoming epic event. Has 200 miles become old hat? I know after some of you did DMD this is merely a cool down/tapering ride.
While I wonder about which tires I'll use (I think I've made a decision) I've been contemplating my clothing. I think I'm going with my Triple Crown 1000 mile club jersey and Castelli bibs. I've cleverly chosen California Flag theme socks to complete my Golden State motif. I've chosen a white helmet and white lightweight jacket to match my white Roubaix. I will be rocking my Oakley Jawbones (biFocal no less).
So, please note how wonderful I look as you zip past me.

I haven't ridden a double since last years Davis Double, and my apprehension is building. This will be my warm-up to Alta Alpina in June, so I'm hoping Davis goes smoothly. Weather looks like it'll be perfect.

(with apologies to Bob Seger)
Thoughts on a Double's Eve
On a long lonesome highway
East of Omaha
You can listen to the engine
Moanin' out its one long song
You can think about the woman
Oor the girl you knew the night before
But your thoughts will soon be wandering
The way they always do
When your riding 14 hours
And there's nuthin' much to do
And you don't feel much like ridin'
You just wish the trip was through
Here I am
On the road again
There I am
Up on the stage
Here I go
Playin' star again
There I go
Turn the page
Out there on the highway
You're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy
You try to give away
As the sweat pours out your body
On 200 miles in one day
Later in the evening
As you lie awake in bed
With the echoes of the chip seal
Ringin' in your head
You drink the day's last gatorade
Rememberin; what she said
Here I am
On the road again
There I am
Up on the stage
Here I go
Playin' star again
There I go
Turn the page

What a difference a year makes! Last year I was on the eve of my 2nd double, this year I still have to break the 500 miles mark.
I wish you all a great ride. While you are suffering on Cardiac or other crazy named hill I will raise my glass to you at my daughter's college graduation.
