Upgrading From Trek 1000

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

And yes, a crankset would be a possible upgrade later, but if you wait until it fails, maybe you can get a
credit towards the purchase of a new Shimano crankset (105 at least) when it's replaced under warranty.
Otherwise, just about every other bit on that bike is dang good and should last you years.
Thank you for the advice, what about the $800 Giant Defy 1 vs the Cannondale CAAD10 for $1400?

Without a doubt, I'd take the CAAD10. The Defy is considered to be the best "entry-level" bike.
I think (based on what you wrote) you are beyond entry-level and are ready to take it to the next level.
If you can, ride them both. The ride should be your deciding factor. Good luck.

BTW...take a ride in CP or along the Hudson.
See how many CAADs there are out there.
Talk to an owner. Get their opinions.
Also, there are plenty of Cannondale dealers in NYC.
Purchasing and servicing your CAAD would be a breeze.
They had CAAD10's before anybody in NYC that I know of:

I just picked up a caad10 with the ultegra set up off of cl 2 days ago. The bike had less than 300 miles and came with the heart rate computer .Looks brand new the seller was getting out of road riding and included all his gear. ( shoes pedals newseat bike rack helmet 3 almost brand-new riding bibs) Only got to put about 40 miles on the bike so far but i'm loving it . Paid $1000.00

That's a great deal! I'm on the hunt for it. I think I'm going to stick with the CAAD10 and not second guess myself.

Hook me up!

I've got a Defy 2 and love it, I wish I could have found the Defy 1 for that price I would jump on that in a heart beat! I spent a little more then 800 for the defy 2 brand new and I'm finding myself upgrade to 105 now.
