buying wheels online
in the market to get some phils to open pros.
initially, i was just going to wait to find a deal on hubs and rebuild to my open pros.. but i've been looking for weeks and this is never going to happen.
if i buy online, is there any wheel building site that actually has hand-built wheels that aren't built up like total garbage?
thanks

The wheels that came on my Wabi Lightning were well built with high tension. They are sold separately by Wabi.

The wheelset was built to spec, were very well packed (readrotected from shipping gorillas) and seems well built, caveat- I know absolutely nothing about wheelbuilding, thus I leave it to pros. Echo Scrodzilla's comment - took them a while from submitting the online order before they shipped them but other than that, a decent purchasing experience.
Also check out universalcycles for a wheelbuild. I've heard good comments on their wheelbuilds but never used them but they are local - in Portland.

What about Ben's/Milwaukee? They have free labor if you buy all the parts from them.

I'm not a shill...
But I had excellent luck with Bicycle Wheel Warehouse [I think they were out of California]. I ordered mavic open pro with ultegra hubs, about $350 range for the pair [quite reasonable]; it took about a week to arrive, but the build was true and have given me great service for over a year now. I'm not a pro or anything [ha, no Zipps for me], but as far as 'true, sturdy, reliable, and good performance', I am quite happy with the company. The wheels came packaged tight, and I could see right off I did good ordering from them. If I order again, it will be with them again. See BWW [and any other company reps out there]...you give good service with a reliable product, and 'word of mouth' gets around. Screw people...and that 'word of mouth' gets around too, ha. BWW did good by me.

I've had good experience with velomine. They built me up a set of deep v's to some shimano 105 hubs for my road bike. Creat communication throughout the build, and they even came with a personal message on a sticky note.
