Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Convince me not to

Let me start by saying, I have been cycling for 2 months now, never cycled before.
I am already looking at replacing my Trek road bike with a carbon (suggestions welcome on which models to test ride), so I am saving up for a new bike.

When I ride I carry:
- iPhone with imapmyride application to save my ride
- Cateye Strada Cadence Cycle Computer so I can see my cadence and speed
- Polar HRM/Watch combo so I can see my heart rate and track my heart rate targets

I have been reading a lot on the Garmin Edge 500 with HRM & cadence. I would still need to carry my iPhone so can make emergency calls but I would eliminate the others. Is it worth the purchase; keeping in mind the $300-$350 cost would come from the new bike savings.

Thoughts or opinions?

A bike makes the ride, all a computer does is spit numbers back at me that I then choose to ignore.

Get new bike first. Gadgetry later. All gadgets are useless without the HTFU attachment.

I just got a Garmin Edge 500 for 285 shipped with heart rate monitor and cadence sensor on eBay. LOVE it. I still have my iphone as well, in case of emergency, but couldn't be happier with the Garmin.

Why do you feel the need to replace it after only 2 months? Do you think you have put in enough saddle time to decide what you need now?

I'm sure the Garmin is cool and all but you're paying a few hundred bucks just to integrate some data you already have. I'd save it for the bike personally.

The main issue I have is with the shifters; impossible to shift in the drops. From what I have read in this forums everybody says better to buy new bike than to upgrade old bike.
Other than that the bike has been great, very compact and nibble, fun to ride.

Get whichever will motivate you to ride more.

For me, that was a Garmin. For some, it's a new bike.

I agree that it would not be worth it to upgrade the brifters etc. I would keep it at the very least as a rain bike. I find myself on the hoods the majority of my riding unless I am racing. What is your spending limit?

I've had my entry bike for 4 months now and I have contemplated about getting a CF bike, but the fact is 2012 bikes are right around the corner. I have decided to wait until next year before wasting time researching for a new bike. Besides, I could use all the time I can get to ride as much as possible.
OP, I was wondering... how many miles you put into 1.1? Most ppl bike over 3k miles (and entered a few local races) before getting another.

Are you in the drops that much where you need to be shifting constantly? I've got Sora shifters myself and really don't mind having to come up out of the drops to shift. I actually enjoy the Sora shifting since I ride in my hoods 90% of my ride.

I doubt this is about a Sora being (insert rationale here)...it is about the OP wanting a new toy. Nothing wrong with another bike if you have the means.

GO FOR IT!

FIFY

I'll bet if you took a poll here, most people have never raced, and have no intentions of it, yet have still upgraded their bike. I would agree, though, that he should put enough miles on it to know what he wants in his next bike.

Hence, the reason why I put it in parentheses I agree - I'm sure some (if not most) people are fine with not racing. But, personally, without the need for competition, I find very little reason to get on the saddle. To each their own.

I say save up the money for the bike, but don't buy it right away. You should really spend some more time on your current bike. Hone your skills on this one before you upgrade. You will get bored to quickly if you constantly upgrade as soon as you want it
