If crankset 52/46 can work?

Hi All,
Questions from my cousin;
He has a racing bike with a frontal chainwheel of 52 and 47 tooths. The gear changer is 105.
He want to change the inner tooth wheel from 47 to 46. I bought him a Sugino
130mm, 46 toothwheel what is also Shimano compatible.
The questions are;
if it can work?
Is it any different between inner and outside toothwheel? I mean how can know surely which plate combination can use?
(This type of tooth wheel Sugino has 38.39.42.46.48.50.52.53, tooths.)
Thanks a lot,
losi

Hi jimc101,
Thanks for the answer. What he want gain will ask him this weekend and will write the answer later.
I hope he knows what he doing and want see the result to understand him.
"What T can the FD take? can you get a middle 46T?" This is also my question when the chain pass to the lower wheel if it will fall to the center of the wheel. For example the 105 5700
I see in my catalogue with two speed the change capacity is 16 tooths and max tooth are 56. But do not know what are the possibilites for the smaller chainwheel.

He will not notice the difference between 47 and 46 .... it's only about 2%.
But if the bolt holes line up, it will work.

How many cogs does he have on the back?

That's a half step crankset. They were popular when 10 speed ment 2 X 5. With 8 or 10 cogs on the back they make less sense.

More of flat land, racing time trial bike. A 130 MM bolt circle crankset will fit a smallest chainwheel of 38 Teeth.
Also the early front derailers had trouble with a wide range,, what's used tese days. Chris

Paris - Roubaix Racers still use a big inner chainring, like the 46..

so there is inside position rings made to suit.

even for the premium priced kit.

Hi, Thanks for all the answers. We will install it in November together and as I see if will fit will work.
I answer for some questions. He want the 46tooths (with the 52 toots) because he like so and I not got a better answer from him. His back gear toots number as it has 9 speeds; 13-28 toots.
I just made a mistake it has now 45 and do not 47 what he want change for 46 toots and very sorry for the mistake.
Will report when it is made.All the best.
