Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Also known as Bellville Rendez-vous. If you haven't watched this movie you need to make it a priority. This is one of the most inventive cinematic creations of all time. A charming, lovely tale told without the first word of dialogue.

A taste...

I would have liked that movie but that effing song the triplets sang drove me nuts. That alone ensures I will never watch it again. The rest was good.

Agree. Captures the story the pain of having your bike stolen and the frustrating and fantic search to be reunited. I won't spoil the end.

But it contains one of my favorite lines:

Pee-wee: There's a lotta things about me you don't know anything about, Dottie. Things you wouldn't understand. Things you couldn't understand. Things you shouldn't understand.
Dottie: I don't understand.
Pee-wee: You don't wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a loner, Dottie. A rebel. So long, Dott.

It sounds like PeeWee stole the italian "Bicycle Thief" theme!

Last week I went to a bicycle film fest. The list is on the link, but they were short films 2-30 minutes long with different themes. I especially liked "The bicycle trip" and "36 bicycles."

"Breaking Away", of course, is the best

Check out "Clunkerz" ... documentary of pioneer mountain bikers (Gary Fisher, Tom Ritchey, Joe Breeze, et al). Even though it's mountain-themed, still good cast..

"American Flyers" subjects you to seeing Kevin Costner wearing a mustache, so can be very painful, but contains some nice actual footage of Coors Classic bike race.

True! He evens uses it on his Twitter profile, too.

2001: A Space Odyssey has a scene where Heywood Floyd's son is riding a recumbent.

I agree that "Breaking Away" is the best. "PeeWee's Big Adventure" is a somewhat close second. I just looked up some of the memorable quotes from the movie and was busting up.

Who cares? it's a good movie, that focuses more on the race, than anything else. Im sure there are a number of goofs during the movie, besides Costner's Stache?

Seriously cannot go wrong with Rad, 1980's awesomeness/ridiculousness. No road bikes however, just cheesy music, backflips, and paper routes on a BMX bike.

Plus ça change...hydration, bonking, doping, motorcycles, caravans, it's all there. Throw in the grooviest music France has to offer, and you can't go wrong.

OP asked for good cycling movies, but most of the films suggested here are crap. Of the serious cycling movies, "The Hard Road" is certainly watchable.

Then there's always this classic...
