Trek - why are there such haters? Same for Bontrager

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hate that even though Trek has continued to surge in popularity and profitability, they continue to move manufacturing offshore. So it begs the question, what if we DO support a US manufacturer? What do we get in return? Oh... that's right, they offshore the mfg anyways. Screw Trek and their commitment to growth over sustainable business practices.

Hey look at that, there was already a thread about trek haters

I personally don't care for the aesthetics of MOST treks. I have on occasion seen a trek that got me excited though, but they are far and few between.

I find most Treks unattractive, save the all back Madones. That said I have a Trek made 08 LeMond Tourmalet (2100ish) with all Bonty parts and Tiagra/105 group that has been a great bike for over eight thousand miles and even a few races.

Now have I a 1997 Trek 930 SHX MTB, and a 2011 Madone 4.7, and I just sold my old 1000 (too small, I'm buying another used one that fits).
All of my Trek's have been great, and the new Madone is awesome, the 1000 that I sold was like-new after seven years (I bought it used).

Why is there a very vocal core group of Trek (and Bontrager) haters?

Real reasons please.

Thanks,

Peter

Evidently, from what I see on pretty much every ride, approximately half of all folks who buy a bicycle didn't hate Trek at the time... I personally wouldn't have one crammed up my arse but that's only because I don't want to look just like half of the rest of the riding planet.

Note: I have a Specialized with crummy peeling paint. Trek doesn't have the franchise on that flaw.

Because Bontrager products are inferior.
People might hate Trek because Trek has the same PR problem that Lance and Jesus both do, and that is that their fans are insufferable. Sometimes they even resort to assuming a self-righteous victimhood so they can judge people for allegedly hating them, when in fact we're all just tired of your whining about how everyone hates your bike.

i've had a bit of bad luck with bontrager. had no idea they were part of Trek.

i forget what they are called, but bontrager has a racing tire that are $60 each. my first pair lasted about 200 miles before falling apart. the second pair is already showing major wear after only racing with them a couple of times. i wont be buying them again

edit: the tires are called "R3 Plus". total crapola.

bypass the shop and ask to meet with the Trek rep. If you can't, contact corporate. That's what I would do....in case anyone other than me cares.

Were they OE on a bike or did you buy them off the shelf? How long did you ride them, time-wise? Any pics? Those are intended to be "stick like glue, wear like butter" race tires. I actually prefer Conti's compound, which seems to be the best of both worlds and have the GP4000S on my bikes. But I have a lot of guys that ride R3s and are happy with them.

Logical fail.

Lemme get this straight: you are essentially saying to hell with Trek and their hundreds of American employees, and to hell with the shops that employ Americans to distribute their products, all because they can't find a way to magically make inexpensive bikes on US soil?

Meanwhile, you cite a company with essentially ZERO US manufacturing presence, and a handful of employees as an example of better?

I think not. We need more jobs, not fewer.

they were brand new tires off the shelf. the first pair, i rode them the first time for a crit. i got a flat tire 20 minutes into it and crashed. the tire seemed fine, so i just changed the tube, and the next day during the road race i got another flat 1 hour into the race. i continued to ride them every now and again at group rides and training crits..they fell apart a week or two later. i threw them in the trash.

i have the second pair now, still on my bike, about to change them and the only have a couple hundred miles on them. they are very worn and im flatting like heck lately. i may take pics later on. the more i think about it, i should have pushed more for my money back or an exchange on that first pair, but i just didn't want to be a jerk about it. they are long gone, in the trash somewhere.

Trek

I absolutely loved my Madone 5.2 Project one before I was hit and the bike destroyed. Because I received full replacement cost on a project one, I've got a decent chunk to shop with and honestly, I'm looking at other brands. Not because I have anything but good experiences with Trek (only Bontrager component I had was brakes and they worked fine) but because I have an opportunity to 'branch out' so to speak and look at other brands. I may circle back to another Madone, but I'm going to look at others too. I ride what I like for myself, but I'd be a hypocrite if I said it didn't make me feel good to have had others admire my ride (though my lime green madone was either loved or hated). There is no doubt that Treks are a dime a dozen where I live so something different would be cool.

Just a quick correction.

Yes, to hell with them and their overpriced bikes. I'll save hundreds of dollars, get better components, do the light assembly work required and enjoy my Motobecane. Screw Cannondale too.

Glad you mentioned Bikes Direct... being in the market for a new bike, I'm curious what the general consensus is on the Motobecane bikes at Bikes directly. Two that specifically caught my eye are:

Not trying to thread jack, please feel free to PM etc... TIA!
