Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Protein, Protein, Protein!

Why do people not understand this? YOUR BODY NEEDS PROTEIN!

Protein is what your body uses for fuel, you don't have any fuel, it eats itself and the muscle attached to it.

People. PROTEIN!

Sorry, just had to vent after a co-worker was telling me protein is bad and you shouldn't eat too much (you can't really eat too much of it) and Honey Nut Cheerios make the best breakfast because they are "good for your heart" and milk needs to be consumed three times a day.

Stupid ****.

Carbs are fuel, though protein can be used for fuel if needed, it's really for rebuilding muscle.

And you can eat too much protein. A very high protein intake is very hard on the kidneys.

I do protein drinks after I exercise. It's more for rebuilding.

People put too much emphasis on Protein. If you eat meat during at least two meals, you most likely are getting enough protein for the day, not even including other sources of protein.

A cyclist's focus needs to be on eating carbs, not protein unless you don't eat meat, or have known protein problems. The world has been thrown into this, we need protein to recover because of muscle builders and the like. If you want to get big legs, drinking protein recovery drinks is most likely going to get you a big belly, not big legs unless you have proper control of the rest of your diet. 90% of amateur cyclists don't need a recovery drink, and if you are a racer and maxxing your body, a little chocolate milk is all ya need.

I'm talking about people in general. Not cyclists, not runners, just regular people who say they don't want to eat protein, like my co worker, who actively tries to avoid protein.

If you don't eat protein, your body goes into starvation mode!

Somewhere in another forum your co-worker is posting the exact opposite.

And you're both correct about each other...

I also thought carbs are fuel.

I am a physician and have NEVER seen kwashikor (or however you spell it, the disease of inadequate protein).

See my tagline for summary.

It's amazing how uneducated people are with nutrition.

Your body needs carbs, fats, and protein.

Carbs are fast burning fuel. Fats are slow burning fuel (your body burns more fat/calorie when walking than running). And protein is also a necessary fuel that is used for bodily functions and muscle repair.

Anyone that cuts out one of these 3 types of fuel is screwing themselves. It's all about balance.

Yes, you sure do. You're right about "starvation mode" too. From my experience, eating a healthy balance of all 3 sources of fuel is the only way to maintain a healthy metabolism and a healthy weight. It also affects how and where your body stores fat (genetics do too obviously) so your physical appearance is greatly affected by your diet as well.

Pro cyclists eat their fair share of red meats and other hearty sources of meat protein. Anyone who thinks pros just consume all their energy in the form of gel packs and bananas is ********. They eat delicious, yummy, HEALTHY meat. Yes, meat is a healthy and natural sources of energy people. If you are active there is no reason to fear red meat.
