Stoker-less for up to a year
Renee and I learned the bad news tonight. She likely won't be able to stoke for up to a year.
She's undergoing surgery for a tram flap reconstruction that hasn't worked out well. This is an outcome of her breast cancer last summer. While thankfully (very thankfully!) there is no issue with her cancer itself, she now needs to be opened up again to fix-up her abdominal muscles. Otherwise, she'd likely suffer a hernia in her abdominal wall.
The doctor told us she can't do anything resembling a hill for up to a year. Since there's not much other than hills in my area, this drastically limits any rides we can do.
Methinks we'll reassess at some point over the next 6-9 months, so maybe there's no need for a full year. But we can't push it.
Folks, enjoy your rides TWOgether (to steal Rudy and Kay's tagline!)

It sure sounds like a long year to us, maybe next year you can do your silver +1 anniversary ride! Our thoughts and prayers for Renee's successful surgery and recovery.

Stoker Kay, also being a cancer survivor, says she'll put in a few extra miles for Renee; but not this week as the weather has turned a bit nasty. Cold, very windy and rain in Tucson.
Paience, and you'll be pedalin' TWOgether again maybe sooner than you think!

This stuff happens. My wife was out for about a year with shoulder problems and surgery.
I was out for 2 years with endocrine problems and recently 4 months with back problems.
It just makes you appreciate more those times when you are having nice ride.
Hope the recovery goes by quickly for you.

I bet your tandem will be ready and willing to go for a great ride as soon as Renee is ready. Hopefully the thought of that great ride will help her to get better a little quicker!

From another stoker, I hope the surgery and rehab are fully successful and as quick as possible. Just something to consider is see if a recumbent, which doesn't put the same stresses on the body, would work for you. We went through some medical issues where we could ride our Double Vision but not our Santana.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, y'all. @djedgar, good idea on the recumbent but ... we'll see ($$$!). Though we'll miss our rides dearly, things could be far worse.

Well, when the healing has progressed enough you might try catching the train to Davis for a day of pancake-flat riding once in a while. It's kind of pretty in the late Spring, before things get too brown.
