My question is this... why would anyone want to put a dynamo on a bike, clip cables to the forks and frame, yuck... when there are perfectly good LED battery lights available .... seems very old fashioned and a heavy way of doing things

I`m not quite sure whether you`re joking or serious, PDR. In case it was a serious question, dynamos have advantages just like batteries do... never need changing charging or checking, you can run them as "daytime running lights" for no extra cost, and some people now use the hubs to charge misc electical toys when they aren`t using the light. As far as weight is concerned, I guess which method is heavier depends on exactly what models you`re talking about- more or less the same. And if you don`t use the dyno for a tail light, it only requires clipping (actually, I use electrical tape) at one point on the fork- the rest of the run can just follow the brake cable that`s already right there. If you already knew that and were just joking, sorry for misreading your tone.

SON Hub weighs 390g and the rolling resistance is a bit greater than the BIKEfun hub when the lights are turned on. When the lights are trned off, their resistances are almost the same.

good for charging your Iphone ( or other stuff by that matter ) for example .. those are battery eaters when run in gps mode ....
cool as you dont need batteries, which are not so great for the enviroment
are just two reasons to run a gen hub
I like the newer led clip ons ... but a nice gen hub with a good led light and possibilty to charge stuff is pretty awesome
not that I am saying this as I sell the cool stuff ...lol

Bit of both really, I'm something of a weight weenie, I removed the original Brompton refectories and fitted lightweight Cateye battery lamps.
There is no rack or mudguards on my lightweight Brompton.... just the luggage block on the front to carry my S-Bag when I need it. I won't fit cycle computers or any other junk and I think cables, magnet blocks etc really spoil the clean looks of a bike.
