Effective Top Tube conversion road to mtn

I ride road and CX - and after a terrible year in cx (my offroad skills blow) - I have decided to get a mtn bike and spend a lot of time on it this year.

My top tube is generally a 560mm (+/-5) and stem is 100mm

I have been looking at a lot of mtn frames lately and they are all over the place. Ive riddena few with different tt lengths and cant tell much of a difference on any kind of demo rides. one bike might have a longer stem or a different seat angle etc.

What is the "standard" to look for when converting your road TT to mtn? I'm guessing I would be looking for something in the 608-618mm range?

I am not a real technical kinda rider, but I love riding. I am thinking that because the posture is different when riding a MTB VS Road riding that the TT length isn't as critical. You can make up some length with the stem and seat position. Good luck on getting on the fat tires. that is what I really like to do.

What part of the world are you riding.

I am looking at 29ers specifically. at 5'10 Im always on the cusp of sizes...

There is no standard, you may get a feel with the reach and stack measurements.

The following things mean a lot to your position:
Handlebars are wider.
Stem lengths vary widely.
Seat tube angles are slacker.
Standover clearance more important.
Bodyweight balance is supposed to be significantly more rear-wards.

Annoying to deal with these things on a per case basis, but there is far more variability with mtn bikes.

You're probably an 18" or 17" for a XC type bicycle. If you are the cusp of a size go up if you want XC/hill climber go down if you want Trail/descender.
