Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Our tandem has a couple of small dents on the top tube. I'm not worried about them.

My wife's CAAD 7 had a deep enough dent on the top tube that I decided to take the crash replacement pricing to replace it. Probably could have been ridden a long time, but at some point it was going to become a problem.

I have a Hybrid Cannondale with 14,744 miles on it, I bought it in the early 80s. I still have it and ride it on occasion when off road or going to the store etc.

Mine is going on 6 years old ... 2006 Specialized Roubaix (carbon fork, seat stays). Like others, haven't been able to justify moving to full carbon yet. Not to say I haven't made a few upgrades along the way.

25. I have a 1987 Cannondale SR600 Criterium with Shimano 600 components. Still a great bike but a bone shaker for sure. I gave it to my brother last summer but made him promise that he'll give it back if he ever doesn't want it anymore.

Mine is about 12-15 years old (I really can't quite remember) and I just rebuilt it with new components this year (SRAM Rival). I debated before investing that kind of money into it, but at the end of the day, I like my frame and didn't really want a whole new bike. Its like a whole new bike now and I am glad I upgraded the components.

Bought my 06 Lemond leftover in 07, it has been a great bike. It got some damage a couple weeks ago when a truck coming from the other direction turned left and took out my buddy and me. Minimal damage to my bike, totaled my friends Obea CF, landed us both in the hospital. I have just over 26,000 miles on it and look forward to adding some more once I'm healthy

I ride a 1998 Trek 1220 that sat in my garage for at least 13 years before I started riding it again. Still looks good!

Try to crush a beer can on your forehead that has no dent in the side. Tehn try to crush it once you've put a dent in the side.
I understand the geometric-structural strength of the pipe shape, which is no different for many other materials. What I don't get is the beer can analogy. The beer can get most of its structural strength because it's liquid filled and pressurized internally. Without that, the can wouldn't survive the transport.

No kidding. Stuff is super weak. Steel is the shiz.

I walk by alu bikes and they turn to fine powder in mere seconds.

Oldest alu bike (actually, I have passed it on to my brother-in-law) is about 15 years old, the next is about 10 years old, and my most recent is about 3 years old. To be honest, I never really set out to buy an alu bike specifically, but it is what I keep ending up with. All three are great bikes - and it turns out keeping the bike in the family is a great way to please the S.O. by trimming the stable, and simultaneously keep the bike in your life. I can't visit my bro-in-law without going to spend time with 15 year old alu bike.

1999 Raleigh R600 105 - aero before aero was cool.
MIne is the one that came with the color shifting paint, green/purple
depending how the light hits it.
Took it out for a quick 10 last night before the thunderstorms rolled in.

I have loved this bike but I have to admit, I'm ready to upgrade.

1991 Cannondale r400. I've been riding it for about 10 years. My dad got it at a yard sale. Still works fine. Only things I've replaced are the saddle, cassette, bar tape, seatpost clamp (in order to mount a rear rack), brake pads, chain, pedals.

Thing is in extremely good condition, was clearly not ridden much. Really nice looking - I put saddle, tires and bar tape on it. Though in looking at the photo I see a few things that need doing. Those pedals are already gone.

Drink the contents sometime, place the can unmarred on the ground standing upright, and then carefully stand on it. The empty can will hold an adult weight as long as its integrity is maintained. Then carefully (while still on it) tap the side of the can. With minor imperfection the strength of the can is completely compromised and collapses. Many people believe the same is true with ALUM bikes. Dent the tubes and suddenly no structural integrity...

"The Atlas boosters would collapse under their own weight if not kept pressurized with nitrogen gas in the tank, even when not fueled. The Atlas booster was unusual in its use of balloon tanks for holding its fuel. The tanks were made from very thin stainless steel that offered minimal or no rigid support. It was pressure in the tanks that gave the rigidity required for space flight."

2000 Fuji Team that I bought in 2006 nearly unused. I replaced the Ultegra drivetrain with Dura-Ace 9-speed, the bike is light and a lot of fun to ride. No carbon stays, but I got used to the stiffness, rode it last year on a 150-mile two-day charity ride with no trouble.

^^^ Gorgeous! I have a 1999 Cannondale T700 that I commute on. The downtube is wider than my wrist and the tube walls are probably thinner than my fingernail. Still rides great.
