Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? i totally agree on this. if we ride drunk, we only hurt ourselves but wont affect others.

i ride drunk pretty frequently, and yes you are basically putting yourself in danger as opposed to driving a car. i get loaded in brooklyn and everyone splits and gets in a car to go to the next place, i just hop on my bike, save myself spending money on a car and usually get there quicker than the car and arrive more alert from riding. i basically got into riding a bike cause the transit system in NYC pisses me off far to frequently. so much better to hop on a bike at the end of the night than take the L to the G or whatever and spend all your quality buzzed time underground waiting for trains to arrive.

Admittedly, this is my favorite time to ride...A few drinks, blaring headphones. Unsafe, but heavenly...

getting a DUI on a bike just seems nutty to me. you have to be pretty hammered and swiveling and shouting at people and **** or live in an area with some extreamly bored/assholish cops to get pulled over on bike. it just does not really cross my mind when i get on my bike after some drinks, usually just focus on where i am going and potholes.

It's illegal.

Not that I didn't do it friday night.

But I have maybe 2 or 3 beers and usually eat before hand. If I feel I can't handle my bike I don't ride it home.

I would argut that by definition, if you can ride a unicycle, you cannot be drunk.

My buddy has a beach house that we frequent during the summer, and I leave a beach cruiser down there all season. He lives just far enough from the bars that walking is a bit of a pain - but a bike ride is lovely. I took a thrown-away wally world bike and spray painted it lime green and grape purple.

I'll be bringing the fixie down this year though.

the cop has to offer you a ride home in washington. it's the 'drunk cyclists' law. doesn't mean you can't be arrested for operating a vehicle intoxicated but it means you won't be because the law is like 'if you're a danger to yourself or anyone else the cop can offer to give you a ride home.

more likely is they let you go, or cite you for drunk in public.

and how drunk are we talking? buzzed is hardly a problem for most and like most things, it's more the type of person you are and the decisions you make while intoxicated that causes any problems.

Two types of drunk riding :

1. You can actually ride the bike and the experience is pleasurable. This is more like buzzed riding I guess...

2. You are so drunk that it isn't fun at all.

I love #1... #2 sucks. Fell over at a standstill, at a stop light because I didn't notice I was coming to a stop.

I do it regularly when the weather is nice - if my BAC is under the legal limit I will ride my **** home, albeit slowly. Dont forget your helmet or lights, and only take bike paths, riding on the open street (like 3-6 lane main roads) is just asking for trouble.

I believe in AZ riding a bicycle while 'impaired' will result in a DUI ticket if the officer really wants to throw the book at you.

I've done it a lot of times, buzzed, drunk and times I don't remember getting home (not the smartest thing to do). Overall "normal" drunk riding is the most fun.

...braaaiiins...

My understanding was that in Iowa, you'd get a public intox rather than a DUI, since a bike isn't a motor vehicle. I have no first-hand knowledge, although I do like riding buzzed now and then.

All the Time. I got the scars to prove it too, a few times when i couldn't even stand i had my friends help get me on my bike between in a alley between two houses so i could brace myself against the walls. 2/3 of those times i made it home just fine, the other required 6 stitches, I got some pretty awesome friends, at least i leave the car at home, which is more than most people who live in northern ontario can say, my biggest worry biking home drunk is getting hit by a drunk driver.

most of such stupidity was a few years ago when i had no regard for my own safety what so ever, maybe it was just arrogance, I've wised up a little since, and tend to bring the helmet when i know I'll be hitting the sauce hard.

how else are you supposed to get back from a bar? pay cab fare? crash your car? take non-existent late night subway rides?

for the record -

# of times getting hit by cars sober: 3
# of times getting hit by cars drunk: 0

# of catastrophic crashes while sober: 1
# of catastrophic crashes while drunk: 0
