I have on old Wal Mart bike (Rhino AL26), aluminum frame and some lower end shimano parts in it, it was actually a decent bike until it was left outside under the porch by my dad. I was wondering if I should toss it out or if I should salvage some parts off it? Being a Wal Mart bike I'm assuming theres not too many parts of value on it, but I've heard about some of them being decent. I have to get to class in a few minutes so I cant snap a picture, here is one I found online. Im sort of new at this, so not sure what to look for, though some of the parts are rusted pretty bad.

Pedals, chain and tires may be keepers. Spare parts take up space, but when you need something and no one is open, something may fit. Wally frames are heavy and very basic. There is a poster here named dminor who may be able to convert the thing to a cat feeder or something.

I not arguing with IthaDan, I am just cheap and take up valuable space with stuff I may use someday. Seriously, packratitis is strong in my family,

I've had similar bikes pass through my hands. A bike flipper would probably pay $10 or $20 for it. The shifters might be salvagable, the V-brakes are actually not bad. The tires, if they don't have dry rot, are usually suitable for riding on the street better than nobbies. The frame is not something you want to mess with. I bring the aluminum frames to the recycle to turn into beer cans.
BTW, if it has alloy pedals like the ones in the pic, I'd certainly save those.

Frame itself is probably fine; shock will be crap and the frame not worth buying a shock that actually works to fix that. I'd say that has ski-bike written all over it .

Pardon my ignorance, but whats a ski bike? Yeah the frame is actually fairly light, so I was hoping I can do something with it, seems like a waste to toss....it was a gift I got long ago and I always feel bad about tossing gifts :X

To be honest I would get a GoPro and some good pads etc.. and make a video on how to destroy a walmart bike. Like take it and jump it ridiculously high etc.. just to see how long it would hold up. I kinda wanna go buy one and do that just for fun!

You're still in school?

Keep it as a hoopty to get around on campus and use a cheap cable lock to secure it. No one is gonna want to steal it.

That leaves your nice bike for the trails.

It's really not - 2000 series AL front triangle, steel swingarm, I weighed an old walgoose frame like that once (with the shock) - it was like 12 pounds. That's about the equivalent of three 6000/7000 series AL hardtail frames.

Its too rusty to really ride around, I just wanted to see if I should salvage some parts. Also, this is a good idea....but it implies I have a nice bike hahaha. My other ride is a 1980s Lotus. Around fall I plan on doing a build, I'm thinking maybe a budget cyclocross build.
