Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Whenever I wear shorts instead of bibs, the pad ends up shifting around, sometimes gets caught on the nose of the saddle, and just plain sagging loosely. The waistband gets uncomfortable, too. Bibs stay in place a lot better and don't have a waistband to dig into me.

I've never noticed red marks on my shoulders (even without a base layer) and, like I said, it's still easy enough to take a leak. Doing a #2 is harder, but hopefully I'm using a toilet instead of having to squat by the side of the road.

But then after getting on the bike and pedaling a few times, you'll find that your junk has fallen and gotten itself into a position where it looks like it's not even there. And you can't adjust it past this point. And you probably won't even notice it until you're standing in the long line for gatorade at a rest stop, but you've already been exposed.

But with bibs, you position everything, and it stays there until you take the bibs off. And you get to sleep better knowing that everyone on your ride got to see your package in the exact configuration that you wanted them to see it.

So there ya go.
Speak for yourself, Tiny. My package doesn't need that kind of help.

Bio breaks with bibs are easier if you wear full-zip jerseys.

Plus they make you look more "euro-pro", or whatever the 41 calls it.

/went bibs.

On a serious note I had a pair of shorts and never used them after trying them once and have never used them after that (put them in the donation bag). Bibs just work better for me.

I got a pair of bibs from Hammer and did a century in them. I never wore them again. The constant pull on the shoulders was pure torture by mile 70 or so. I have no problems with shorts at all. I don't think I will be wasting anymore money on bibs as I see no advantage to them even if they didn't torture me.

intuitively, it does seem like bibs would be more prone to fit issues because of the torso length. some people may prefer the legs and seat of the shorts to be either insanely tight or fairly loose (for lycra), and bibs just might be intolerant of that.

so you have people, say around 6 foot, that wear medium shorts no problem and then try medium bibs and whoa! major pressure on the crotch and shoulders because the length is all wrong. and I'm sure there is a group of folks on the heavy side who wear large shorts no problem, but large bibs are too tall.

And I'm sure that this was the problem that I had. I'm 150 lbs, 5'7" and have a short torso and a 30" inseam. When I was trying on bibs I found it hard to find one that was a really good fit. In shorts, I wear a medium so I tried several brands of medium sized bibs. What I found is that the bottom part of the bibs fit pretty much like my shorts do, but the tops were either too long or too short. The one pair that I did find that was the most comfortable was made by Canari. When I started wearing them on rides, the shift in position from standing upright to riding the hoods caused the shoulder straps to tug on my shoulders and made it just too darn annoying. Never had any problems with shorts not fitting properly. My PI shorts have drawstrings on the waistband so the uncomfortable elastic waistband issue that everyone mentions is not an issue for me.

If only we had the technology for adjustable shoulder straps. Or just cut them off and be done with it.

Different brand bibs have different length straps - that's for sure. Hincampie bibs for example seem to have longer straps than say Castelli.

True. My Voler bibs have really long/loose straps also. My Capo bibs do NOT.

Well, yeah, you'd think that if George had any input into their design, he'd want longer straps, being a tall guy.

Well, thanks for the warning. I'll stay away from this dangerous gateway drug, then. Truth is, I wasn't going to experiment with bibs anyway. I'm not Andre the Giant, and I'm not a triathlete, either, so I won't pee on my bike. (Plus, the pants I already own are comfortable enough and I've already paid for them.)

It seems like he does. If you look at him you can tell he has a long torso. His jersey's are also longer than most. His stuff fits me well - the only thing I don't like about it is it usually has the Hincampie logo emblazoned in bilboard size lettering.
