Davis Double 2012

Registration opened today March 2 for the annual Davis Double Century.
I'm in. How about you?

Just for the heck of it, here's a link to my audio report on the 2009 ride, used by the Fredcast. https://home.comcast.net/%7Ecccorlew/...avisdouble.m4a if you'd like to hear what it's really like. and here are my old guy tips for getting through the 200 mile ride. https://ccorlew.blogspot.com/2011/05/...lete-tips.html

And, a youtube link to the butterfly attack suffered by Taxi777 and Curtis in 08.

From their email:
Known for its outstanding support and challenging-yet-doable course, the Davis Double offers scenic roads, great food, and the satisfaction of completing 200 miles in one day. Along with SAG and mechanical support, well-stocked rest stops and a lunch stop, your $90 registration fee includes an event t-shirt and a hearty post-ride meal.

This year the DC will be held on Saturday, May 19. Online registration is via Eventbrite at https://2012davisdouble.eventbrite.com. Registration is limited to 1,000 riders; register early! Deadline for online registration is Friday, May 11.

Extra kudos to you (in anticipation of huge Stava scores) for taking on this challenge again. If for 1/2 an hour I thought I could do this...

It's not as hard as running, or riding the trainer for an hour and a half (when it isn't even dark outside....)

If my new bike proves to be comfortable enough, maybe I'll give it a go next year. I like the triple crown jersey. It's just the earning it part....

Davis was my "token" double. I'm pretty much done with those. But it was a great ride and I'm glad I did it (even though I could barely walk the next day). If you're thinking about doing a double, this is a great introduction.

It conflicts with ATOC ... I'm not missing Baldy on ATOC this year, so I'll have to pass on Davis this year.

Countdown to the Davis Double. 17 Days, so this post needs a bump. Who's in? So far it's Lanceoldstrong and my own slug self. I'm feeling pretty good after DMD (pretty good being such a vague and relative term) and should be able to roll this puppy.

No 2012 for me. Maybe if I loose a little more weight and find a riding partner (because I doubt I can get "Stoquette" to do it with me on our tandem) I'll try again in 2013. I would really like to do it again on the 40th anniversary of the last time, when I was one of the youngest riders to complete the ride (in a breath taking 21 hours--but hey I was a 15 year old kid!). My riding partner in 1973 was Tommy Hill who I have lost track of for decades now. Tommy, if you read this drop me a note!

I recall it being grueling, but 39 years helps one forget the pain.

I'm in. This will be the 14th Davis double for me. My first double ever was Davis back in 87 so this marks the 25th anniversary of that ride. Did that one in 12:40 total time. Later got much faster but I don't think I have much chance of matching even that time now. I'm older, obviously, and I don't live in Davis any more so I'm not used to riding in the heat and on the flats.

I did 87 too. It was my second Davis and I did it in 12:30! I couldn't imagine pulling a time like that again : (
Wasn't that the one where there was a car bike accident coming out of clearlake? I remember seeing bike parts all over the place. It was also a bit warm but, I think it was more from riding to hard.

Yes, I remember seeing the aftermath of that bike-car accident after lunch and being shaken up about it. I also remember 87 as the last year that there was a mass start with riders roughly sorted by their speed.

F$%^%$^%K

I'm out. I tore my calf muscle and can hardly walk, even with a cane. I will not start. I will not earn my Triple Crown at Davis this year.

Although it is widely held to be impossible for something to both suck and blow, your news will force science to rethink this principle.

That sucks! Glad you had the big one in the bag before this happened.
Heal fast.
