It sure does. I can make out some of the letters at the top... but cannot seem to make a word out of it. I am guessing it's in Flemmish?

That is exactly what I ended up doing, same thing with the fenders. Now, I just need to get the spokes tensioned better. I think I will leave that job up to the LBS.

Please - don't do that!
People who know how to handle wooden rims adequately are few as hen's teeth.
I would even make very, very sure that the wheels *really* have to be tensioned, as wooden rims do NOT tolerate much tension and can VERY easily be ruined by overtensioning - 50 year old rims at that (even though they could as well have profited from aging, IF they've been treated/stored well).
You've been warned ...

What are the letters you do recognise? (Or at least think you do) Some of us are pretty familiar with the Flemish language, and with Belgian topography, so might recognise a word or the name of a town.

All this talk of wooden rims, old metal and boiled linseed oil has me awfully excited. I'm afflicted!

I will have to be the first to say that was pretty poor of you to trade your well treated DL-1 for such a shabby old bike...Didn't even take the feelings of the poor DL-1 into consideration

Awesome find!

I agree with trying to keep it as original as possible without any repaints. I have seen way too many things ruined by a full restoration when it would have been much nicer in a cleanup and kept as found condition.

This is a really great thread! It really says something, doesn't it, about how lovely bikes are that they can have all of the paint missing and be so beat up and still be so pretty.

This is great. Great thread. Can you post some more photos of that headbadge? I haven't been able to make out anything beyond what you describe, but clearly there is a lot there, and sooner or later we'll figure it out.

I'm going to pick up the next DL1 I see so I can trade it for one of these!

Ok then, I will definitely keep this in mind. I did see that the spokes are seated all the way into the nipple, so maybe that is an indication that they are where they need to be. Can you give me an idea about what kind of tension to expect? Right now i'd say I can squeeze spokes and easily move them 1/8 to a 1/4in side to side.

Those look nicer than my rims for sure, very nice. Can you describe the spoke tension at all? I know that is probably difficult to put into words. That is one BEEFY chain!

Ok, here are some more pictures. I thought the flash in my camera might bring out lost contrast or details. Some of the details are easier to see with the naked eye. I think the right side of the wing might have the letters "mpio", maybe the word "Champion"?

It seems obvious that it is a large bird, with outstretched wings and a bicycle wheel. The colors seem to be gold, green, blue and maybe red.
