1983 Trek 600 build

EDIT: UPDATED PHOTO IN THE LAST POST, 4-29-30. LINK.

I recently picked up this 1983 Trek 600 as a frameset (with a few extras still attached). It came with the Jim Blackburn rack as well as the original crankset, shifters, headset, bottom bracket and brakes. The only things I'm still using are the headset and rack. I've always liked this particular type of early Trek decals. The font is really nice, I think. It has some scrapes and scratches, and a small dent in the downtube, so I decided it would make a really nice beater. I liked it a little too much and got carried away, so it's not so much a beater now. I just took it out for a 30 mile ride all around Brooklyn and it rides very nicely--smooth and stable. The VO compact double crankset is just perfect for my needs. The saddle is from another bike, so I need to pick one up for this. I'm thinking maybe B-17N? The seatpost is not right for this bike either, I'll be looking for another one. Yes, I ride with it that low--and the large "head" on this post makes it look even lower than it really is. I have really short legs and a long torso, that's just how it is for me.

So here are some photos I took today of the bike, hope you like it.

Tektro R559. Long reach. More reach than I actually needed, but they work great. I have Kool Stop salmon pads in there, and the thing stops on a dime.

Nice! I like the maroon color.

Could you get some closer shots of the text, and also the logo on front?

That's one of the nicest "beaters" I've ever seen ;-)

Dig it man. I have early 600 calipers on my Trek and they are rather subpar. Maybe I'll get a set of Tektros. Nice build up

From an 83 project of mine. Had it powder coated, so off came the decals. Here's the original:

Thanks guys. Looks like simmonsgc already beat me to it with the decals photo. Mine are the same but the background is silver. I rode the bike to work this morning and I'm really enthusiastic about it.

Here's the catalog page for this bike from 1983, for the curious.

Thanks for the closeups. I do like the font, like you said.

Pretty cool seeing catalog as well.

When you wear out that bar tape, go with some Fizik Microtex in silver.

I have the same bike, 1983 Trek 600 . Yours look great, congrats! (I think all the time about getting another bike but the fit and sizing is so perfect for me that I end up liking more and more my Trek, I actually may get another Trek down the road, early to mid '80s (If I find one). Here is mine:

Too much for me. I like cloth. I almost went with gray cloth, but I had some black around so I used it.

Here's an updated photo I took yesterday at Coney Island. Several changes. It now has 35mm Paselas and no fenders. This is the biggest tire I can fit. I've also swapped out the derailleurs for some Suntour Cyclones, and the shifters for some Silver shifters from Rivendell. I built new wheels with CR-18 rims. The rear has a Shimano 105 hub with a 7-speed cassette, and the front has a Sanyo dynohub. Of course, I added lights for that. The bars are now Nitto randos, with gray cloth tape. I swapped out the saddle for a brown one, and the seatpost is a Trek system 2 (from the 90's?). I like this bike a lot and I ride it almost every day. (Link to larger version of this photo)

I got to test ride this bike earlier this month. It has a charismatic feel that I can't explain. It rides even better than it looks.

Thanks, Tom, glad you liked it. I have already made more changes! It has a Nitto Technomic stem now, and I went down to 32mm tires. I also redid the brake and shifter cables with some metallic braided housings from VO. I actually kinda think it looked better with the black housings. Oh well.
