Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Durability/ longevity of road shoes with non replaceable heel pads

I'm looking into road shoes, but I'm always looking for a road shoe with a replaceable heel pad because it lasts longer. For those who have road shoes like shimano or lower end specialized shoes, how long do they last. Will the foundation/ upper of the shoe wear out faster than the heel? I don't want to have road shoes with a hole in the heel because it doesn't have a replaceable heel pad. Also, I bike mostly in the city, so lots of stops(haven't learned how to track stand on a roadie yet ).

I have a pair of S Works shoes that have about 15K on them. They do not have the disposable heel, the new ones do. The area where the heel meets the carbon sole is giving in. I cannot tell a difference in riding or walking. The fact that specialized now makes a replaceable heel tells me that this might have been a problem. On the other hand, they have served me well and I am replacing them with Rapha Grand Tours that do not have a replaceable heel. I got a great deal from our race sponsored bike shop I couldn't pass up! I will crit race with my S Works and wear the Raphas everywhere else.

FYI, you can always use a bit of Shoe Goo or Goop to rebuild the area. It lasts a long time on the sole of shoes.

I have a pair of Giro Factor and the non-replaceable heel was a concern of mine when I first got them. After a full year of use the concern was unwarranted as there is no wear what so ever.

My current pair of road shoes are 4 years old and have a non replaceable heel. I still only have minor wear on it.

Same with my Shimanos. Heel pads wiggle around a little, but thats about it. Fit is way more important. Sidi's don't fit me.

+1 on Shoe Goo. I even use a thin film of it on my road shoes' heels and front tip before even wearing them. Kinda oc, but it works for me.

I put Shoe Goo on the Speedplay cleats too. It makes walking in them easier, especially in wet conditions and increases their life. I no longer need cleat covers.

Like other have said, this isn't an issue. I have 3 years of hard use on my (carbon soled) cleats with little to no wear. You don't really walk a lot in road cleats. Road cleats tend to last a really long time, another reason it makes sense to spend a bit of money and get the good stuff up front.

No, heel definitely wears out faster than...well, nearly any other part of the shoe. I've got a pair of cycling shoes that are 7 years old, uppers are in fine shape, the velcro on some of the straps is losing its grip, the buckles/latches are a bit finnicky, but they work quite acceptably as a backup shoe or for really crappy weather when I don't want to get my good shoes wet. But the heel has been worn off for the past ~3 years or so.

Heck, I have a pair of shoes that are less than 2 years old and the heel has been worn off!
