Picked this up last week but can't figure out to much about it. It had a suntour GT rear der, sr cranks, Suntour Symmetric downtube shifters, and dia compe gran compe brakes and levers installed on it.. along with a bag of random parts to build it and a newer set of matrix wheels.

Alright the 005xxx serial number puts this as a 1981 according to the vintage-trek site but I don't see any listing for an '81 thats blue with silver panel and head tube. My guess puts it as a 700 something due to the 531 fork and slight remains of a Reynolds decal on the seat tube. But i thought 700's and up had the lugs with TREK stamped in them?

Hi-- If memory serves, that seat tube wrap decal was used only '80 through '83. No canti bosses means x10 or x14? Did it have a triple? Looks like you can read the serial, so easiest way is to just go decode it at https://vintage-trek.com/SerialNumbers.htm

Had a double on it when I picked it up. Wasn't looking for another project atm but it was my size and the metallic blue looks nice in the sun so for the price I couldn't pass it up. Just hoping to figure out what model/year it really is so I can collect the correct parts for the rebuild this winter.

very nice! ive got 2 lesser models a 300 and a 520 im pretty sure both from the early/mid 80s who both use TREK marked lugs and drop outs so i think it was the more lowley models that used trek lugs and the higher end stuff had plain lugs and campy drops and ends also both of mine use fast back type clusters and both have under the BB cable routing where i think the nice models were more like yours with the nice stay caps and over the BB campy-esque routing

but im no expert!

boy that bottom bracket must be really tight/crunchy for that lone NDS arm to be standing up like that!

i wouldn't be surprised it that frame was originally spec'd with 27" rims (630mm), but don't worry, any long reach brake from the mid 80's will work with 700c (622mm) rims if that's the route you go. i built my '79 (and i think yours is anywhere between 80-83) up with mid/late 80's shimano 600 stuff and am using kinlin xr200 in 700c. should be a nice bike when you "git'r done".

Also- assuming that it was fitted with the original parts, you can decode their date of manufacture stamps; that could also help you to pin down the year.

Please don't repaint that frame! The color combo would make it a '81 710 or possibly an early '82 715.

Components could be mixed and matched back then, so date codes might help with confirming the year but not necessarily the model. For example, I had a '81 412 with the same dark blue Imron paint. Mine was ordered new with a Ishiwata 10 manganese fork, Weinmann concave wheelset, and no frame decal.

Bike is def not getting a repaint just a good was and wax, order a new decal to replace the missing renyolds one on the frame and clean up the parts i got with it and use those to try it out. Then if it rides as nice as i hope it'll be time to piece together a period correct record gruppo.

My 412 had a few paint scrapes that I touched up with Duplicolor Scratch-Fix. After using polishing compound over the touched up areas the new paint was only noticeable at certain light angles. Unlikely you'll be disappointed with the ride quality. My 412 was very smooth and responsive on new Paselas.
