Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

traveling with my bike in a rental car

An unusual topic, or at least I've not seen this discussed before.

I am heading down to NC this spring for a few rides and I've decided to rent a car instead of putting all the miles on mine. I figure this will be easier than dealing with airports and all that other crap, plus it gives me wheels while I'm down there. Anyway I was looking at renting a Ford Focus (easy on gas, cheap rental) but I am concerned that my bike won't fit in it. I have a specialized sworks that I will remove the wheels, anyone know if this bike will fit in a focus with the wheels off? How about a Ford Fusion?

I know, I could buy a bike rack for the car, but I really don't want to spend the cash on a car carrier for a car I don't own. Lemme know what you think, I'm looking to nail down a car soon.

Thanks, hope all are enjoying their winter.

Of course it will fit. At the least, you will have to take off the front wheel. You may have to take of the front and back wheel, or you may have to take off both wheels and the handlebar. If you are trying to fit in the trunk your luggage will go in the seats. If you are trying to fit in the seats you won't be able to pick up hitchhikers. I personally would go with purchasing a low cost but functional bike rack. Makes it much easier to handle the bike. If it is a one time use you could always sell it on Craigslist when you get back. Of course you are too ethical to do something like buy it from REI where you can return anything anytime.

Just rent an SUV, put the back seat down, and you don't need to do anything. That's what I've done, and it really wasn't much more expensive.

I can probably fit 2 roadbikes in my wife's Honda Civic with the
wheels and bars removed. You'll fit one bike in a Ford Focus.

I just did this last weekend with a rented Focus. You can remove the wheels, flip the bike upside down, and put it in the back seat. The back seats fold down, so I was also able to take off the wheels and slide it in through the trunk.

I do ride a little 52cm frame, but I don't see why a larger one would have any problems fitting in there.
