Shimano SPD maintenance
I've got a set of Shimano 520 SPD pedals with over 13,000 miles. Thought they still rode perfectly I was checking them out and found a barely detectable amount of play in the bearings on one pedal. Pulled the spindle and decided that I'd look on the net before disassembly. I find that it contains 2 sets of 12 loose microscopic (1 mm or so) ball bearings each. Frankly I'd rather buy a new set for around $25 that mess with that. Is there something short of total disassembly that I can do? Maybe soak in solvent, tighten slightly to remove play, pack it in appropriate grease, slap it back in and don't worry about?
Happily, these are now my spare set.

If it were me, I'd cough up the $25.

Easy decision. At 13,000 miles, they're almost surely worn out anyway.

Regrease and tighten----Then go and buy a new pair of pedals.

Me too, Tom, at that price new pedals are a no brainer. I'd do like you said and make them a spare pair after cleaning, packing and reassembling, then put them in a plastic bag. My old 540 are just that way now.

At 13K miles, you could probably use new cleats anyway and they cost almost as much as the pedals w/ cleats.

If you made it to 13,000 miles on those pedals, you got more than the standard lifespan out of them. Plus they're probably all worn to hell anyway, where your shoe contacts the edges. Get new ones before your cleats start to get stuck in them.

A little play won't hurt anything. The pedals on my main road bike have had a fair bit of play for about two years and 10k miles. On the plus side, they spin really freely.
