I didn't remotely imply any method must be used, or my method
should be used, it was just food for thought that may help some.
I guess I did imply some methods are not so good, or fine if
you accept / want a compromise elsewhere, e.g. saddle height.
How long ? A long time with big gaps. Recently 3 months, 300 miles.
At my age I think about stuff I never did before, I just rode it, with
whatever rudimentary set up I thought was right. e.g. I'll never now
ride without a helmet even though I never did before, and sometimes
riding the bike I get this strange feeling like I haven't put my seatbelt
on when driving, I'm much more aware of danger and my mortality.
Its odd, over the 3 months my initial bike skills from memory have
moreorless unravelled and I'm having to relearn almost everything
beyond the major basics to actually feel confident on the bike.

When I learned to ride a bicycle, I learned to leave my right foot on the pedal, and put my left foot on the ground when I came to a stop.
When I got clipless pedals, I was told that I would have to switch feet ... that it is easier to clip in with my dominant foot. And I was told that since I am mostly right-handed, my dominant foot was my right foot. So the advice was that I leave the left foot clipped in, and unclip and re-clip with the right foot.
It took me a while, and a couple falls, to retrain myself, but I did it.
But it is a TOMBAY vs. to-MAH-to thing ... it really doesn't matter. Whatever feels comfortable for you. I've known some people who don't seem to have a preference at all ... they'll clip out either foot or both sometimes.
As far as the sharply crowned road thing, I ride in all sorts of countries, on whichever side of the road is appropriate. And I'm not about to switch feet based on which country I'm in.
