Heart attack, die or worse? Ass scents? You're not talking about that tandem ride with Justin again are you? Sorry, I misread that. Never mind.

For me, it's not so much "lost my nerve", as "lost my verve" when it comes to climbing. Used to hammer my brains out whenever the road went up, to the extent that I got a bit of a reputation: "We must be climbing, there goes Scott". Nowadays, not so much. I blame it on the discovery that with the right gearing, I can get up the hills much more comfortably, if not quite as rapidly. ;-)

A heart attack on a descent is doubtful, a local bike shop owner did collapse and expire while climbing not too long ago, tragic for all. Especially as there was no will, trust, corporation, LLC... off to probate land, shop closed, employees locked out, a legal wreck.

The nice thing about ascents is that they permit me to count the number of riders who were previously behind me.

Something about adding spices to cat meat to add to that cat like flavor.

Joking aside for a sec (is that allowed?), just last month, I started using low gears and riding up hills more slowly. I realize that if I keep proving myself to myself, my knees won't last me the rest of my life. I'm going to let people pass me now. I've been a good hill climber, but I'm going to give up the showing off.

one life on two wheels
It is very brave of you to come forward with this, now it's time for action. Talk to your local bike advocacy groups. You can't be the only one suffering from this. Get others involved. Seek out a support group or start your own. You live in CA, right? I hear it's real techy out there. If you're lucky enough to live in one of the more affluent communities, find out if they have it in the budget to have some ski lifts installed at the bottom of some of the scarier hills? A trolly for the timid perhaps? Californians love paying taxes for this kind of thing.
