Hello everybody, my name is Mike and I'm new here. I got into biking this past April when my fiancé had my old bike fixed up for me for my birthday. It's a 1992 or 93 (don't remember exactly) Giant Innova Hybrid. Purple. Don't know what I was thinking when I bought that color. I now generally refer to it as the Purple Dinosaur. As for Clydesdale stats, I think I'm good, 6'2", 250. After dealing with thyroid cancer last year I felt the need to get into some sort of sport, but I never expected to get into cycling. When I started riding I thought it would just be commuting, but as I've gotten into it I've discovered that it's an addiction. Now I'm getting ready to do my first century on August 2nd, and I'm thinking about some sort of racing next year. The one odd thing I've noticed is that I really haven't dropped much weight, it just seems to be moving around. Maybe I really am building muscle. Anyway, I look forward to learning a lot here.

Hello all,
Name is DJ, I've been around the forums for a while, haven't been on in a while though. Mainly lurking around the last few months again. I'm a Clydesdale at 220lbs, been into powerlifting the last 3 years, and getting into cycling more again. Just purchased a road bike, previously just had a track bike. Looking to put in some miles, signed up for a 50 mile ride in august, and doing a ride in september that will be 2 50 mile rides over 2 days. Included a video from the last powerlifting competition I was in this past May (if anyone wants to watch), Lifts go squat 407, 457, bench 281, 303, 325, and deadlift, 407, 457, and missing 500.

Hi guys/gals,
Figured I'd hop in here cause I definitely qualify 5'8" and 225 lbs, down from ~290 lbs in high school. Not all of that is attributed to biking, but a fair amount is. Started biking cause I remembered how much I liked it even when I was a big fella, but also because gas got kinda pricey for me a few years back. Y'all can see my bikes below:
Franken-bike that I cobbled together when I got back into biking. Great ride on both trails and road. The wheels handle my big a$$ really well, and this bike took me on my first ever century last summer!
Recently purchased Gravity Liberty 3. Took it for its inaugural ride yesterday before it started raining, and it's pretty awesome. Definitely the nicest bike I've ever owned, and the price was fantastic too. Hoping to put some SPD pedals on it soon, will have to deal with the clips for now.

Hey everyone, another newbie here! Jeff from VT...Just back into biking after oh about 20 years..I'm at 280lb now, after dropping over 100lb in the last year, was running, but foot injuries have forced me to switch my focus back to 2 wheels. Just bought my first bike - Dawes Lightning Cross - Took it out for maiden voyage last night, and ended up getting snakbit after about 3 miles...without a spare....Very excited to be back in the saddle.. Been spinning for about 6 months, but now back to the road...Looking for any information to get me up to speed, and starting from scratch with gear & equipment, so any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Got a new ride a few weeks ago due to my 41st B-Day present, Specialized Carve Comp, from my wife getting stolen out of my garage. I am down from my starting point in February of 6' tall and 275 lbs. to 218 lbs. on the scale this AM. I was wearing a 42" waist pants and just bought a pair of 36" Fox Ranger shorts yesterday!!!! WOOOO WHOOOO! Would really like to drop another 20-25 lbs. in the next few months.
Here is some eye candy.
Specialized Roubaix Elite Apex for the road.
New Specialized Stumpjumper HT Comp for the weekends.

Hi
Hi Folks,
Im a super Clyde if there ever was one. I'm 6'0 and get ready, 400lbs. I lost 130lbs due to weight loss surgery over the past two years. I have found that bike riding is my way to reaching the weight that I want to be. I have never done any activity that has given me more enjoyment than riding my bike, well, maybe one, but this is a family board.
I was hoping someone might be able to give me some advice on rear wheels. I'm on my second bike, I destroyed my first hoping a curb and ended up buying a Scott Aspect 950. I'll put some pics below for everyone's enjoyment.
The problem I'm having is that I have been riding my new Scott for about 3 months and have started breaking spokes in the rear wheel. Had both wheels trued and 2 new spokes put in yesterday. Rode to work this morning and ping! Another spoke bites the dust.
Do I need a better back rim and heavier spokes? What about a fat bike for winter riding? Can they be modified for heavier riders, I would love to ride all winter. Keep in mind Im in Canada around Niagara Falls.
this was my first bike.

I guess I am a Clyde also. I am 5'11" and I now weigh about 235 down from 269 at the first of the year. I ride a Sun recumbent delta trike. I am 68 years old and my doctor wanted me to lose weight. This is the only exercise that I do. I try to ride between 10 and 15 miles everyday. I am enjoying retirement. Here in Las Vegas, we can ride all year round.

I've been there...
I had the same problem. I bought a used Specialized Crosstrail. I lost my first spoke days after buying the bike. I had it replaced and then lost another. Then, like you, I thought maybe that if I put in stronger spokes the problem would be solved. I replaced the spokes on both tires, not just the rear. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. A bike mechanic suggested I consider going with a 36 spoke rim as opposed to the 34 spoke rim the bike came with. I made the change and I have had no problems for the last few years. Now, while I have lost a bunch of weight, I am still over 300 lbs. My only problem with my bike is the occasional flat I get. The wheel has been great. I found the rim on Amazon and it cost about $55.00. You can have an even beefier rear wheel built by a bike mechanic. I was quoted about $200. Good luck and keep up the good work.

I find this thread super-encouraging . . . I've struggled with weight since I hit 30 years . . . which was about 20 years ago . . . and since then, I've repeatedly lost the same 20 lbs over and over and over again. Most recently, early this summer I weighed in at 216 lb, then after a week camping at the Grand Canyon, and doing 7 hr hikes down into the canyon . . . and back up . . . I returned home weighing in at 208 lbs. On a roll, down to 205. For some reason, I'm really really motivated to get under 200 for cyclocross race season, even though it's just and arbitrary number, I mean, in kg, it's something like 91 kg, right, which is not as nice of a round number goal, maybe sub-90 kg will be the next goal. But racing at 199 lbs is sooooo much more fun than racing at 210 or even 205, when the hills are not your friends. It's been since last Dec when I was sub-200, and each time I get there, I promise myself . . . NEVER AGAIN . . . will I cross the threshhold back into 200-plus . . . and then I lose focus, get sick, stress at work, whatever, and 10 lbs are back on just like that, typically gain 8 lbs over Christmas break, without the bike commute and WITH all the eating events. So really, I need to get down to the low 190s BEFORE Christmas to absorb the inevitable holiday pounds.
Very motivating reading through this thread and finding all the folks with a similar struggle . . . KEEP THE FAITH!
ps--I'm seven foot tall . . . kidding. 6 even . . .

holy powerlifting man . . . that is some nice form . . . love the depth on that squat. I'm nearly your body weight but lifting less than half what you do. I don't think most people appreciate how much technique is involved in those lifts. nicely done.

Is the criteria to be considered a Clydesale simply that one must weigh over 200lbs?
I'm 6'5 215. Same weight as when I was in college. Just curious, often thought about entering some small town race as a Clyde and was unsure of culture.

You gonna eat that?
You're Clyde. Even though you are fit (okay, just barely into the Overweight category with a 25.5 BMI), you still have a lot of the issues other Clydes have, specifically the fact that bikes are generally designed with an upper weight limit of roughly 200-250 lb. (yes, lots of more capable bikes out there, but standard design is for lighter weight riders). As for the culture, I don't have a clue. I don't bother to race.

Thanks man, yeah it takes a lot of work that's for sure. Been out of the gym for a bit, cycling more. Got a plan for the next 3 months to lift and ride without annihilating myself hopefully lol. Just keep lifting, patience is extremely necessary for getting stronger.

For my build, BMI is spot on. When it says I'm fit, I feel fit. When it says I'm obese, I feel like I'm gonna die. When it says I'm overweight, I can definitely stand to lose a few pounds. I know for other people it's off (mostly, I think, people who've been or are serious athletes), but for me? It's a pretty good scale.

Hi All,
I ride because I've always loved riding. I've had 3 eras of riding: as a teen on a Schwinn Traveler, in the 90's commuted a few years on the Erie Canal on a Trek 1770, and now in the teens.
I've been a clyde since I was 20. Clyde by act of God as they say, but now a Pachy by act of Pizza, Beer, and long hours in a Desk job.
I'm 6' (5' 11 1/2' after squat or deadlift days) currently 265. I lift heavy, but do not compete. Deadlift 550 for double, Free Squat 550 for double before I quit this summer after it was found I blew c5-6 disc, likely very old injury. Hammer Strength squat a single at 819. I can't bench due to slap tear, but I can decline and incline. Decline Bench 5x5x450, same with rows... Military press maxed at 335, but I'm laying off to let shoulder issue fade.
Bought a love at first sight Fuji Tourer in 2007 put a couple thousand miles on but had issues related to my weight. Broken spokes, tearing rear wheel free and into chain stay if I pedaled with any real torque, braking on hills w/pack and etc. So used it as a donor cycle and built up a Disc LHT this year and am loving it.
I set a soft target of 100+ miles a week this summer and hit it 5 times, missed it as many... Trying to commute 1 day a week at 23 miles each way.
Last year my SO and I road the Erie canal and it was a BLAST! She's one hell of a climber! Fortunately she's also charitable!

I saw 204.6 on the scale this morning . . . hadn't weighed for a long time . . . so took a chance, and now I am psyched. if I had gained weight, I would have been pretty discouraged and probably drown my sorrows in food. but now "I'm on a roll" . . . first time I've been under 205 in . . . I don't know how long, maybe a year. On my way below 200 . . . or bust! yay me!

May be a bit premature, but I'm checking in at 5'10" @ 258 lbs and 30% body fat. I'm currently trying to settle on my first road/touring bike with my primary goal being improved fitness and health. The wife and I frequently go on long walks, but I live in a bustling suburban area, and walking around here is twelve kinds of boring - as such it always seems to take far too much time for far too little benefit (though admittedly, it's better than spending my time holding down the couch).
I tend to "over-research" things (paralysis by analysis) sometimes, but I plan on pulling the trigger on something in the next week or so. Wish me luck!
