Went for a quick ride on July 21st.....

Got home from the Hospital on July 29th. This is my first day sitting up to use the computer

Short version, went for a quick 50 km evening ride and had a head on hit with an oncoming jeep that turned left in front of me while I was going about 28 km per hour. I landed on my head (wearing a helmet) and broke my neck. I am healing, along with 50 sutures or so in my lower left leg where the jeeps winch caught me.

Lucky to be here!!

YIKES! Glad you are still with us!! That always scares me, the oblivious drivers that look right through me, even if I have blinking lights AND a dayglo yellow vest on! I am ALWAYS watching for them, ready to brake or swerve...but....
Hope the healing goes well and you quickly recover and get back on the saddle.

Argg! Sorry VJP! That is crap deal! I broke my lower back last year. Full recovery is a silly term. You will never be like you were before though you may be able to do everything you did before in some ways it will be different and you will have to learn how to function a little differently. I am still learning and it is hard. I am still not fully "back on the bike" like I should be. Take is slow, that is the advice I got and the advice I would give. You will always look back and think.... I should have moved slower.. taken more time off work and been easier on myself... take it slow, be angry, get upset but try to remember you will overcome it one way or another.

Holy Cr@p, that is scary stuff. Are you stuck in one of those Halo contraptions, with the bolts stuck into your head to keep it from turning? My big bro got one of those exactly a year ago from a bad day of body surfing. Had to wear it for a couple months. He's still fairly limited on how far he can turn his neck, but he broke about 5 of his vertebrae, iirc.

Listen to the Doc!
When I broke my leg last Oct., the Doc told me how fast my progress should be.
I thought I'd beat those timelines. Wrong-- he's been right on. (pizzas me off)

Thanks for the well wishes!!! A lot of great advice also, and Cyclotoine I had no idea about your back, really sorry to hear about that, glad you are healing also.

No halo, cervical collar (Aspen), considering the various possibilities of my accident, I am feeling blessed.

Chat again soon.

Indeed, be careful and take your time in healing. For a little inspiration, here is a link to a local rider, Sandy Scott, Florida Senior cycling champ who came back from a broken neck and is back racing....NO WAY I could even think of sticking on his wheel.

Amazing story! On a side note: I hope no one here is a chiropractor but just another reason to avoid them like the plague. What a bunch of quacks.

Did you watch the video? A chiro tried to crack his broken neck! Last year my wife went to a chiro because her back hurt. Did she order an MRI? No. Did she say want us to get one when we suggested it? No. She just kept twisting and cracking and twisting and cracking on my wife's ruptured disk. You won't ever see me in at chiro ever again. Couldn't pay me to do it.

thanks for the post, vjp! we're all thinking about you.

i've fishtailed sideways twice, locking up the rear wheel, in front of drivers turning left without seeing me. each happened during the day. i'm amazed i pulled it off twice, missing the cars and without falling over. i could never do this purposefully, without the immediate, unexpected danger. it's amazing what the body can pull off when the adrenaline kicks in and death stares right at you. i hope i never need to do it again, for i surely won't be batting 1000 indefinitely.

get well!
